On May 14, Singapore began construction of Terminal 5 (T5) at Changi International Airport. The world's fourth-busiest airport is expanding to accommodate the growing air travel in Asia after the pandemic.
The new terminal will be inaugurated after 2030 and will have a capacity to serve up to 50 million passengers per year in the first phase.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Terminal 5 was a "significant engineering project" that would benefit local businesses and workers.
"Our local businesses will have the opportunity to participate in this construction process, some are ready to participate and the works are being carried out," CNA quoted Mr. Wong as saying.
The Singapore Prime Minister added that when T5 comes into operation, demand for services and workers will also increase, both at the airport and related industries.
Changi International Airport is expected to connect Singapore to more than 200 cities by the mid-2030s, up from about 170 cities today.

The Singapore government postponed construction of Terminal 5 for two years in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The terminal has since undergone several design changes to accommodate post-pandemic travel needs.
The T5 is designed to withstand the harsh effects of weather and climate change, and is suitable for large-scale technology deployment.
Changi Airport currently has a capacity of 90 million passengers a year, with 67.7 million last year. Terminal 5, once completed, will expand Changi's capacity by more than 50% to 140 million passengers.
