Specifically, according to Mr. Vo Van Ngoan, by the afternoon of July 28, the authorities had finished covering ponds 8, 9 and 11 with tarps.

“For pond number 12, the installation and covering work is being carried out urgently by the environmental sector. However, in recent days, there has been continuous heavy rain and thunderstorms in the area, so the progress is slow,” Mr. Ngoan informed.

In addition to covering the garbage ponds with tarpaulins to minimize odor dispersion, An Hiep landfill is currently operating a leachate filtration and treatment system with a capacity of 80m³/day and night, to reduce the amount of water remaining in the landfill, in order to reduce water and air pollution from here.

Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province, Vo Van Ngoan, said that after overcoming the shortcomings at the An Hiep landfill, the department will invite the local government, the Fatherland Front, organizations and people to inspect and supervise the environmental pollution remediation here. The monitoring session is expected to take place on the afternoon of July 30.

Previously, as reported by SGGP Newspaper, the stench and leachate from An Hiep landfill often spread and flowed around, causing environmental pollution, seriously affecting the health and daily life of hundreds of households in the area, especially during times of heavy rain and strong winds.

Too frustrated, in mid-July 2025, many households set up checkpoints, not allowing garbage trucks to enter An Hiep landfill.

This is the third time people have organized to block garbage trucks, the previous two times were in July 2023 and July 2024.

On July 22, 2025, leaders of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Vinh Long province and related units held a dialogue with the people, pledging to fix the environmental pollution problem within 5 days.
