On the same morning, Air Force Regiment 940, Air Force Officer School, Air Defense - Air Force organized a daily training flight at Phu Cat airport, with Yak-130 aircraft (registration number 210D), flying lesson 208, long-distance flight - no-fly zone - through clouds in complex meteorological conditions, with Colonel Nguyen Van Son flying the front cabin and Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Quan flying the rear cabin. This was the third flight, the second flight of the front cabin pilot in the daily flight.
The plane took off at 9:55 a.m., and at 10:38 a.m., when the flight ended and it was about to land, the pilot reported that the plane's landing gear could not be released. He also took emergency measures to handle the situation but was still unsuccessful. The pilot reported to the flight commander and was allowed to parachute. The two pilots, Colonel Nguyen Van Son and Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Quan, parachuted at 10:51 a.m. at the TB2 Shooting Range, Tay Son, Binh Dinh.
At 4:30 p.m. the same day, Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Hong Quan contacted his unit by mobile phone, reporting that he was on top of a high mountain, but his exact location was unknown due to unstable mobile signal.
Then, at around 6:45 p.m., the search and rescue team continued to receive information from the mobile phone of Colonel Nguyen Van Son, the second person in the crashed plane.
Speaking to the press, Lieutenant General Trinh Dinh Thach, Political Commissar of Military Region 5, said that through GPS, the authorities have verified the location of the two pilots. Division 2 of Military Region 5 has set up 15 search teams with more than 100 soldiers, along with district and provincial forces. Each team has a ranger to guide the way. Because the area is mountainous, has heavy rain and is dark, reaching the two pilots is difficult and takes many hours. On the morning of November 7, rescue units will focus on searching for the Yak-130 aircraft.
The Yak-130 will be equipped for the 940th Air Regiment (under the Air Force Officer School, Air Defense - Air Force) from 2021. This is a training aircraft (two seats) jointly produced by Russia and Italy. The aircraft can operate in combat with medium-range reconnaissance and attack capabilities.
