Suspected case of using "black oil" to cook for students: School changes boarding meal provider

Regarding the incident in which parents in Phuc Tho commune (Hanoi) were upset because they suspected that the unit providing meals for boarding schools used "black cooking oil" to fry food for students, many schools decided to change the supplier of meals for boarding schools.

Regarding the incident in which a group of parents from Tho Loc Primary School (Phuc Tho Commune, Hanoi ) made a surprise inspection at My Giang Service and Trade Company Limited - the school's food supplier - and discovered food fried in pans of black oil. The parents suspected that the cooking oil had been used many times and was not safe for health.

Speaking to a reporter from the Vietnam Women's Newspaper, Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Tu, Principal of Tho Loc Primary School (Phuc Tho, Hanoi), said: "On October 26 (after 2 days of parents reporting that the above unit used black cooking oil), the school held a meeting and decided to change the supplier of boarding meals.

However, during the past school week, the school temporarily stopped organizing meals for boarding students to complete some related procedures. The school will organize meals for boarding students again from November 3rd and the unit providing meals will be a new unit."

According to Ms. Bui Thi Ngoc Tu, changing the school's meal provider helps parents feel secure and, importantly, ensures the safety of students.

In addition to providing meals for Tho Loc Primary School, My Giang Service and Trading Company Limited - a unit providing meals for a number of schools such as: Son Dong Primary School, Phuc Tho Town Primary School in Phuc Tho commune, Hanoi.

My Giang Service and Trading Company Limited is a supplier of meals to many schools in Phuc Tho commune.

Regarding this incident, Ms. Khuat Thi Hong Quyen - Principal of Son Dong Primary School - confirmed that the school had reported to the leaders of the People's Committee of Phuc Tho commune. "The school has participated in meetings and fully implemented the steps."

Medical staff of Phuc Tho Town Primary School, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thang informed: "The school has changed the food supplier."

Suspected boarding school meal provider using "black oil"

* As reported by the Vietnam Women's Newspaper, on the morning of October 24, a group of parents from Tho Loc Primary School (Phuc Tho Commune, Hanoi) made a surprise inspection at My Giang Service and Trade Company Limited - the school's food supplier. The parents discovered food being fried in pans of black oil, suspecting that the cooking oil had been used many times and was not safe for health.

However, the parents did not report or contact the school or leaders at all levels. It was not until noon on October 24 that the parents posted on social media that the school learned of the information. Immediately after learning of the incident, an inspection team consisting of school leaders, medical staff, leaders of the Department of Culture and Social Affairs of Phuc Tho commune, and the police came to the unit, but the cooking oil in the pan was not black as the parents reported.

The inspection team took oil samples for testing and the results were negative, with no burning or foul odor detected.

At the same time, the leaders of Phuc Tho Commune People's Committee went down to meet directly with the school's board of directors and parents and invited the above meal supplier to work.
