Doctors at the Ear - Nose - Throat clinic, Department of Examination and Outpatient Treatment, Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases have successfully treated a case of dangerous foreign body in the ear in a young child.

The patient is a 6-year-old girl whose eardrum almost ruptured due to a piece of rubber hair tie lodged deep in her ear canal.

According to the family, about a week before being hospitalized, the child often complained of ringing in the ears, occasionally complained of pain, and had a habit of constantly picking his ears.

At night, the baby often shook his head and appeared restless and uncomfortable. Suspecting that there was a foreign object in his ear, his family used an ear pick to check and discovered a foreign object, but could not remove it.

When the child started to react strongly, be scared and cry loudly every time his ear was touched, the family took him to the hospital.

At the clinic, doctors discovered a soft foreign object lying right next to the patient's right eardrum.

Because the child was frightened and uncooperative, the team had to mobilize 4-5 permanent support staff to remove the foreign object. The object was identified as a piece of rubber hair tie.

Fortunately, because the foreign object was not sharp, it did not cause serious damage, but it pressed directly on the eardrum, leading to ear blockage and tinnitus that lasted for many days.

Master, Doctor Bui Thi Khanh Hoa - the person who directly treated the case - said: "The foreign object is close to the eardrum. If you continue to dig deeper or try to remove it at home, the risk of perforating the eardrum is very high.

This can lead to hearing loss, long-term ear infections, and even surgery to patch the eardrum. This case was fortunate because the foreign object was soft rubber, but it still caused obvious discomfort to the child.

According to Dr. Hoa, many parents are often subjective when they see foreign objects that do not cause severe pain or bleeding. However, small objects such as plastic beads, toy fragments, earring fragments, hair ties... if they get into the ear can silently cause blockage and infection.

When children dig too deep, the risk of damaging the eardrum is very high. More worryingly, young children do not know how to express unusual feelings, so they only express them through behaviors such as scratching their ears, shaking their heads, crying for no reason or complaining of ringing in the ears.

Now, summer has begun, it is also the time when children enter the long summer vacation.

This is the time when children can play and explore more, but at the same time, there are many potential risks of household accidents, especially with small objects that can easily get into the ears, nose and throat.

Therefore, Dr. Hoa said: "Parents should absolutely avoid letting children play alone with small objects such as beads, rubber bands, tiny toys...

If your child shows any unusual signs in their ears, even if it's just frequent ear picking or crying for no apparent reason, they should be taken to the doctor as soon as possible."

In particular, you should not arbitrarily use tools to remove foreign objects at home because it can cause the foreign object to go deeper, increasing the risk of damage to the ear canal or perforation of the eardrum.
