Overcoming the “archival memory” stereotype

In the flow of cinema, documentaries have always played the role of a historical witness, truthfully recording human life and society. However, in the digital age, Vietnamese documentaries face the challenge of overcoming the prejudice of “archival memories” to become living works of art.

Over the years, the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio has constantly innovated, producing documentaries of high artistic and humanistic value. However, filmmakers still face many difficulties, first of all the limitation of topics.

Meritorious Artist Trinh Quang Tung, Deputy General Director in charge of the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio, admitted that finding new topics in the current context is a big challenge. Many films still revolve around familiar themes such as islands, mountains, and traditional history, while hot issues of contemporary society have not been deeply explored.

Notably, the pressure of deadlines and standards for screenwriters to find new ideas has led to a situation where films are made in a rut, with some films even using more than half of old material.

Besides, creativity in storytelling is also worth discussing. Many documentaries today are still poor in terms of images, abusing flycams and lacking creative camera angles. "Directing is a profession that cannot be justified, cannot be blamed for any reason," director Hoang Dung pondered.

Meanwhile, cinematographer Ta Duc Nguyen also emphasized that the cameraman must “breathe” with the character, not just ensure enough scenes. Director Le Tuan Anh also shared his experience when he personally held the camera for his own film to capture the “illusory” moments - the thing that makes the difference for the work.

A good documentary does not simply convey information but must tell a compelling story. The most important thing is still human destiny and the breath of life. Therefore, filmmakers need to invest carefully in the script, build deep characters, and combine documents and real scenes creatively.

Chairman of the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio Nguyen Quang Tuan emphasized that each script needs to be proactively prepared in advance, with close cooperation between the screenwriter, director and cameraman. Organizing creative camps, supporting the search for topics, and expanding the ordering policy will help filmmakers have more conditions to create and develop.

In addition, releasing documentaries on online platforms is also a direction that needs to be focused on to expand the audience. Over the past 70 years, the Central Documentary and Scientific Film Studio has made significant contributions to the development of Vietnamese cinema, creating documentaries of great value on history, culture and social life.

Films such as "Accompanying History" by director Nguyen Quang Tuan, "The Calligrapher" by director Dang Thi Linh or "Walking in the Mist" by director Nguyen Van Kiem... are recognized by viewers.
