Biometric authentication - a safe solution for customers

Việt NamViệt Nam09/07/2024

(VLO) According to Decision No. 2345 of the State Bank of Vietnam (SBV) on implementing safety and security solutions in online payments and bank card payments, from July 1, users must authenticate biometrically (STH) by face when transferring money over 10 million VND or transferring an amount of more than 20 million VND/day.

Up to now, banks in the province have been and are continuing to support customers in completing the steps to update STH information to ensure the transaction process takes place smoothly.

Banks actively support customers

The regulation requiring the application of STH authentication method for some online banking transactions has officially taken effect since July 1. Accordingly, banks in the province are also actively promoting and supporting customers to complete the steps to update STH information for convenient and uninterrupted payment transactions.

It has been noted that in many banks in the province, in recent days, many customers have come to ask for support in STH authentication. On July 1-2, the number of customers coming to banks was quite large, bank staff had to be busy, working continuously to support customers. Banks arranged human resources and equipment to support customers at the counter.

In addition, some bank branches also send credit officers to some units and businesses that pay salaries through the bank to support STH authentication.

However, according to some banks, the implementation process at the branch still encountered some difficulties. In the first few days of implementing STH authentication, due to the large number of customers performing it at the same time, there was a local network congestion at a certain time, but it did not have a major impact on the entire system. Up to now, the implementation has been faster and smoother.

Mr. Ho Viet Anh - Director of Agribank Vinh Long branch, said: To implement the regulations of the State Bank of Vietnam, the unit has prepared infrastructure and focused human resources to deploy STH data collection.

At the same time, proactively notify customers about the implementation of STH collection on the Agribank Plus application; assign staff to consult and guide customers to install STH authentication; equip STH collection devices at transaction points in the province and 1 mobile transaction point with specialized vehicles, all of which are "clean" devices to enhance support and ensure the safety of customer accounts. In addition to providing direct customer support at transaction points, the Bank also promotes and guides on the Bank's official platforms.

At the same time, direct STH authentication instruction sessions are also organized at agencies and enterprises using salary payment services via bank accounts. Thereby, timely response to the implementation of STH collection, ensuring the smooth transaction process.

“Because most of the customers of Agribank Vinh Long branch in rural areas are mainly manual laborers and farmers, they still encounter some difficulties when operating on technological devices.

Or when customers can collect STH at home through mobile banking/internet banking applications, they also encounter many difficulties such as facial authentication errors, devices not supporting wireless connection standards (NFC)...

Therefore, the Bank hopes that customers can sympathize and encourage customers to go to the nearest transaction point of the Bank for direct support" - Mr. Ho Viet Anh added.

Ensuring benefits for both banks and customers

Many people who perform STH authentication said that, initially, STH authentication also caused some trouble in the implementation process. However, STH is considered a positive step forward, helping to minimize risks, protecting both banks and customers from increasingly sophisticated and complicated frauds and scams.

While asking for instructions on how to install STH from VietinBank Vinh Long branch, Mr. Nguyen Van Khanh, 71 years old (in Ward 4, Vinh Long City), said: "I am old and not familiar with technology. I have authenticated STH at home many times, but the app kept reporting errors, so I had to go to the bank for support.

Here, I was given specific installation instructions, quickly completed in just a few minutes. From now on, I can feel more secure in online money transfer and receiving transactions."

Present at the transaction counter of Agribank Vinh Long branch, Mr. Nguyen Hung Si - Regional Manager of De Heus Company Limited - Vinh Long branch, said: "Because of the nature of my job, I often transact large amounts of money every day.

When I learned about the State Bank's regulations on STH authentication, I went to the bank where I registered my account and was enthusiastically supported by Agribank staff, completing the transaction in just 5 minutes. This made me feel much more secure when making online payments."

According to some banks, facial recognition data is highly secure, in line with the current digital transformation trend in the world and Vietnam when e-commerce is expanding. This is also one of the advanced and important solutions, contributing to ensuring the safety of customer accounts.

According to Mr. Ho Viet Anh, implementing STH authentication under the direction of the State Bank of Vietnam contributes to enhancing security and safety for both customers and banks, which is completely in line with the world's development trend.

This authentication brings many benefits, such as: Safe transactions because STH technology accurately authenticates customers when making transactions, minimizing the possibility of counterfeiting and information theft; Transactions are performed faster when using STH data instead of entering information (password and PIN) as before, limiting the case of customers forgetting passwords and PINs.

However, according to information from users and banks, at this time, taking advantage of the situation where many customers are having difficulty collecting STH on bank applications, scammers have impersonated bank employees to call and text to "support" installing STH in order to appropriate customers' assets and information.

Mr. Ho Viet Anh affirmed that currently, Agribank Vinh Long branch does not implement measures to guide customers to collect STH remotely via links, websites, or calls.

If so, it is the case that the bank staff will contact and invite the customer to the transaction point for direct support. Therefore, customers need to be extremely vigilant to avoid the risk of forgery, fraud, and information theft.

To avoid being scammed during the STH update process, banks have announced that they will not directly contact customers to guide them in collecting STH, so absolutely do not provide OTP codes, passwords, CCCD numbers... to anyone.

Customers need to be extremely careful when making financial transactions, even when STH authentication measures have been applied, and need to regularly check transaction history and not share personal information to ensure safety when making transactions.
