1. Learn about lubricants
Most manufacturers specify engine oil specifically for motorbikes and scooters. Motorcycle oil is completely different from car oil. Typically, high-grade engine oil for cars cannot be used for motorcycles and vice versa. The main difference lies in the operating mode.
Therefore, to distinguish the types of oil, manufacturers rely on the standards of the American Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) and divide them into two types: single-grade oil and multi-grade oil. In which, single-grade oil only meets the required viscosity at a certain temperature, while multi-grade oil can flexibly adjust the viscosity at many different temperatures.
Currently, the market is still popular with multi-grade engine oil with the symbol "W" on the oil tank such as 5W40, 10W60, etc. The letter W is considered an abbreviation for "Winter" indicating the ability to start in cold weather. Multi-grade oil ensures the appropriate viscosity to lubricate the engine well at high temperatures while ensuring that the oil is not too thick at low temperatures to help the vehicle start and operate easily.
2. How often does a motorbike need an oil change?
In Vietnam, due to poor road conditions, car manufacturers recommend regular oil changes according to the maintenance schedule in the owner's manual for each vehicle type.
If using the vehicle under normal conditions, after the first 1,000 km, the oil must be changed and then every 4,000 km.
For vehicles that are used regularly about 1,000 km per month, the oil change time should be shortened. However, in the beginning, with a new vehicle, if you change the oil early after running for 500 km, it is better.
Scooters have two types of oil, engine oil and gear oil. According to experience, for every 3 engine oil changes, change the gear oil once.
