After a week of searching, authorities have yet to find the victim who fell into the "death hole", while the water in the hole is rising again, making rescue work difficult.
On the morning of June 2, Ms. Hoang Thi Thu Nguyet, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Environment of Na Ri district (Bac Kan) said that after a week of searching, the authorities still have not found the man driving the motorbike that fell into the 10m deep "death hole", despite applying many methods.
Ms. Nguyet shared that the complex geological structure of the area posed many challenges for the search. The sinkhole is believed to be related to an underground cave system, with many layers of limestone and strong underground water veins, posing a potential risk of landslides at any time. The search area has been expanded, and the authorities have mobilized more specialized equipment and increased forces to speed up the search.
"Search and rescue operations are still being actively carried out, hoping to find the victims. However, with the complicated developments at the scene and geological difficulties, this process may take longer," Mrs. Nguyet added.
Mr. Le Quang Giap, Commander of the Kim Lu Commune Military Command, said that since 10 p.m. on May 26, more than 10 militia officers and soldiers of Kim Lu Commune have been on duty 24/7 here, coordinating with other forces to deploy rescue measures and search for victims.
"From the moment the victim fell into the "death hole" in Kim Lu commune, Na Ri district, all levels and functional agencies, especially the rescue force, raced against time, regardless of danger and hardship to find the victim," Mr. Giap added.
The search has been hampered in recent days as water levels in the sinkhole have risen again, hampering rescue efforts. The scene remains cordoned off, with warning ropes in place, and rescuers have set up makeshift tents and are working through the night to search for the missing.
Along with the authorities, the family and relatives of the victim Nguyen Duy Ph. (36 years old) also stayed at the scene day and night, constantly hoping and waiting for a miracle. Mr. Nguyen Duy Tien (victim Ph.'s brother) has been present at the scene for the past few days. His face was haggard after many sleepless nights of worry.
"My whole family is very shocked and worried. We just hope that the authorities and rescue forces will do their best to find my brother, no matter the circumstances, so that the family will not have to worry." Mr. Tien choked up and shared.
According to Mr. Tien, Ph. is the youngest child, unmarried, and self-employed.
"Ph. lives with and takes care of his elderly parents. He is gentle, emotional and has never let anyone worry in life," Mr. Tien added.
As reported by VTC News, at around 9:00 p.m. on May 26, Nguyen Duy Ph. (36 years old, living in Kim Hy commune, Na Ri district) drove his motorbike at high speed and crashed into an area that was fenced off as dangerous due to a large sinkhole appearing in the middle of the median strip on National Highway 3B. After that, both the man and the motorbike fell into the deep hole.
Immediately after receiving the information, the Na Ri District People's Committee urgently directed forces including soldiers, police and militia to organize search and rescue. The functional forces used many modern and manual equipment such as specialized cameras, field pumps, mechanical tools... to serve the search but still could not find the victim.
The "death hole" on Highway 3B is one of seven holes in Kim Lu commune that have appeared in the past two months. The hole is more than 10 meters in diameter and about 10 meters deep. Authorities dumped materials into the hole but they were all washed away. Authorities have cordoned off the area and banned vehicles from entering.
On May 14, the People's Committee of Bac Kan province decided to declare a natural disaster emergency due to the sinkhole phenomenon in Kim Lu commune, Na Ri district. This phenomenon directly threatens the safety of people's lives and property in the area (around the sinkhole area, there are 21 households, 92 people in Hiep Luc village, Kim Lu commune and about 12 hectares of agricultural land).
The Provincial People's Committee requested Na Ri district and specialized agencies to use materials to fill sinkholes, monitor subsidence, promptly detect signs, and delimit dangerous areas. At the same time, the locality proactively evacuated and relocated people from dangerous areas, arranged accommodation and ensured logistics for people at the evacuation site.
