Germany ranks third in importing Vietnamese pangasius in the EU. According to Vietnam Customs data, in the first half of February this year, Germany only bought less than 700 thousand USD worth of pangasius from Vietnam, down 60% compared to the same period in 2023. As of February 15, 2024, cumulative pangasius exports to Germany reached about 2.5 million USD, down 42% compared to the same period last year.
According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, while most major markets consuming pangasius increased imports, Germany went from being a bright spot in the first half of 2023 to a market with erratic increases and decreases in export turnover.
The economy of Europe’s most prosperous country is also forecast to face many challenges in 2024. Vietnam’s pangasius exports to Germany are unlikely to stabilize this year.
In January 2024, Vietnam's pangasius exports to the EU market reached 13 million USD, up 20% over the same period last year, accounting for 7.8% of the total pangasius exports to markets. In particular, the Netherlands continues to be the largest consumer of pangasius in the EU with 4 million USD, up 16% over the same period in 2023. After the Netherlands, the markets of Spain, Germany, Belgium, and Poland are the main markets importing the most Vietnamese pangasius in the EU.
Notably, pangasius exports to some individual markets in the bloc recorded triple-digit growth, including Hungary with a four-fold increase; Slovenia, Spain and France with an approximately 2.5-fold increase and Italy with a two-fold increase compared to January 2023.
