“Western Medicine in the North (1873-1945)” is a book by Dr. Bui Thi Ha, published by Ho Chi Minh City General Publishing House. The book outlines the process of Western medicine activities during this period, which impacted Vietnamese medicine in the 19th and 20th centuries. During the process of invasion, exploitation, and colonial rule, France introduced Western medicine to the North. European and indigenous medical staff also appeared and participated in professional activities. From there, it helped Vietnamese people for the first time to come into contact with, apply, and enjoy the advanced achievements of world science and technology.
Dr. Bui Thi Ha is currently working at the Institute of History, Vietnam Academy of Social Sciences. According to the author, through the process of scientific research, it has been realized that medicine in this period has an important meaning in the study of the history of Bac Ky, the history of modern Vietnamese medicine, contributing to the education of traditions for generations of doctors and medical staff, promoting current medical training activities.
