The journey to conquer "Gold" of a country boy
Born and raised in a poor land, Duc Long commune, Que Vo town, Bac Ninh province, all the brothers and sisters in Nguyen Cong Vinh's family tried hard to study and had good results. One of Vinh's older sisters studied at Hai Phong Medical University, one sister studied at the University of Commerce, and the youngest brother was still young.
Ms. Nguyen Quynh Mai, Vinh's mother, said: From a young age, Vinh showed his intelligence and quick wit with a special memory ability. At the age of 5, he could read and write fluently. He loves to read books and actively absorbs knowledge. Seeing his love for learning, she plays the role of mother, teacher, and companion to him.
Because his family did not have the means, his travel and study were very difficult. Although he was thinner than his friends, Vinh wanted to study at Nguyen Cao Secondary School - a key school in Que Vo town, so since grade 6, Vinh had to travel more than 20km by bus to school. The long distance could not stop Vinh's determination. He quickly proved his ability and was selected to be part of the school's excellent student team.
Vinh said: In middle school, I was selected to be in the school's Math team, but because I liked Physics, I boldly proposed to be transferred to the Physics team. In grade 9, in the Que Vo town's Excellent Student Competition, Vinh won first prize at the district level; second prize at the Bac Ninh province's Excellent Student Competition. Since I was a child, I loved Physics, so I could explain everyday natural phenomena such as clouds, rain, thunder, lightning, electricity, and the effects of force.
In high school, he took the entrance exam to the Physics specialized class at Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted and had the opportunity to maximize his ability to study, research and conquer knowledge. He started joining the pre-team class and the national Physics excellent student team from grade 11. In addition to regular class time and self-study at home, Vinh often spends 3 hours in the library reading books and learning in-depth knowledge about Physics.
To be able to study Physics well, according to Vinh, there needs to be a smooth coordination between theory and practice, so he often studies to grasp the theory, then applies it to practice; at the same time, combines practice to review the theory. In addition, he often explains daily problems to consolidate his knowledge.
With that effective learning method, Vinh has an admirable record of academic achievements. In May 2023, at the High School Olympic Competition organized by Hanoi National University, he won a Gold Medal; In the Competition for Excellent Students of Specialized High Schools in the Coastal and Northern Delta regions in July 2023, he continued to win a Gold Medal. In grade 11, he won first prize in the National High School Physics Competition, Bronze Medal in the European Physics Olympiad. In grade 12, Vinh won first prize, valedictorian of the National High School Physics Competition, Gold Medal in the 25th Asian Physics Olympiad.
With this achievement, Nguyen Cong Vinh is one of the five official members selected for the Vietnam National Team to participate in the International Physics Olympiad (IPhO) taking place in France from July 17-25.
Continue writing the dream of becoming an artificial intelligence engineer
Mr. Nguyen Chi Trung, Head of the Physics Department, Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, said: The Asian Physics Olympiad is a rather difficult competition, gathering many strong competitors in the world such as China, Korea, Russia, Singapore, Taiwan (China). These are countries and territories with traditions and systematic investment in Physics.
However, with confidence and courage, Nguyen Cong Vinh won convincingly, contributing 1 Gold Medal to the Vietnam Physics Team's achievements, putting Vietnam in the group of 5 countries with the highest achievements at the competition (Vietnam Physics Team has 3 Gold Medals, 3 Silver Medals, 2 Bronze Medals).
Accompanying Vinh from the first days of high school, teacher Trung shared: Through interactions and ability tests, he realized that Vinh was a well-behaved, intelligent student, with a serious attitude towards studying and a special passion for Physics; he was one of the top students in the class.
For every problem that is raised, Vinh is always serious and determined to complete it at a high level. In addition to the content discussed in class, Vinh also regularly meets and discusses with the teacher when encountering difficult problems to find effective solutions.
Directly presenting the Certificate of Merit to Nguyen Cong Vinh, after he excellently won the Gold Medal at the 25th Asian Physics Olympiad, Chairman of Bac Ninh Provincial People's Committee Vuong Quoc Tuan congratulated the student and Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, the provincial Department of Education and Training for their outstanding achievements. He affirmed that in addition to the students' own efforts, this outstanding achievement shows that the training system at all levels and key training of Bac Ninh is on the right track, creating talents for the province and the country.
In the context of Bac Ninh province strongly implementing the contents of Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW, December 22, 2024 of the Politburo on breakthroughs in science, technology, innovation and national digital transformation, Mr. Vuong Quoc Tuan suggested that the school maintain its brand as an outstanding local specialized school, continue to train and foster talented students to contribute talents to the country. Nguyen Cong Vinh continues to review and practice to achieve the best results at the International Physics Olympiad held in July 2025.
Nguyen Cong Vinh sincerely thanks the attention and encouragement of the provincial leaders and the Department of Education and Training throughout his studies; appreciates the dedicated and loving guidance and teaching of his teachers. This will be a great source of motivation for him to continue to strive to achieve high results at the International Physics Olympiad. In the future, with the strong development of science and technology, Vinh dreams of becoming an artificial intelligence engineer. Hopefully, with his ability and passion, his dream will soon come true.

Along with Nguyen Cong Vinh, Bac Ninh also has 2 students from Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted selected by the Ministry of Education and Training to be on the Vietnamese team to compete in the International Olympiad in 2025. They are: Truong Thanh Xuan, a member of the Vietnamese team to compete in the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), held next July in Australia;
Ngo Quang Minh is a member of the Vietnamese team competing in the International Chemistry Olympiad (ICho), to be held in July in the United Arab Emirates. Two 12th grade Physics students from Bac Ninh High School for the Gifted, Nguyen Tran Hieu and Ha Tuan Kiet, have just been announced by the Vietnam Physics Association to be selected for the Vietnamese team to participate in the European Physics Olympiad (EuPhO) 2025, to be held in mid-June.
According to the Department of Education and Training of Bac Ninh province, in the 2024-2025 school year, the whole province has 5 students participating in 6 competitions (3 international, 3 regional) in all 3 subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry. The tradition of studiousness, the attention, synchronous and correct investment of the province and the self-study awareness of each student are the steps to help them confidently step into all knowledge arenas.
