55 online bridges and the main live point in Hanoi for students and Student Union officials to share in the workshop "Improving the quality of the "5 Good Students" movement" towards the 75th anniversary of the Traditional Day of Students and the Vietnam Student Union on January 9.

It is estimated that more than 2,900 delegates participated at all the locations. Hanoi alone had more than 300 delegates who were key officials of the Student Union and typical examples of those who had achieved central-level titles.

Need to better communicate the value of the title

In many opinions discussing solutions to improve the quality of the "5 Good Students" movement, there was a frank statement that there are still students who are indifferent to the movement. This is either due to study pressure, or because they do not fully understand the movement.

Ms. Doan Mai Duong (University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi) said that there is a situation where students participate in the movement because they want to achieve a title rather than develop themselves. Because of the goal of achieving a title, Ms. Duong said that there are some students who come to the activity in a formal way. If that is the case, the movement will no longer be practical and sustainable.

Chairman of the Vietnam Student Association in Hanoi Nguyen Tien Hung said that the five criteria set out in the "5 Good Students" movement are nothing more than the goal of changing students' awareness.

Achieving the title, according to Mr. Hung, is not like passing an exam but rather helping students understand what those criteria are designed for.

Explaining, Mr. Tien Hung gave an example that the criterion of good ethics is not set to "win this or that award" but to help students practice to have increasingly strong political will. Or studying well is aiming for students to have a foundation of knowledge and modern, scientific thinking methods.

Similarly, good physical fitness is not just about participating in a few races but about building a sense of sportsmanship and practicing a healthy lifestyle.

"Good volunteering does not stop at participating in five volunteer days, but from there, it fosters the desire to contribute to the community and society in students," Mr. Hung shared.

Taking into account specific student groups

Citing the reality at Tra Vinh University, which is also the only place in the country that teaches the Southern Khmer language, Ms. Nguyen Khanh Bao Thuy Vy (Vice President of the Tra Vinh University Student Association) said that students studying this faculty have monks. If students can participate in running, swimming, cycling, volleyball, and soccer competitions to meet the criteria of good physical fitness, monks cannot!

"Students can participate in running and walking competitions through online applications, but monks do not use smartphones so commonly that it can be counted like that. Not to mention, we need to consider specific characteristics such as disabled students, how to meet the criteria of good physical condition to meet all five criteria of the title "5 Good Students", Ms. Vy raised the issue.

From there, Ms. Vy said that it is necessary to amend and maybe issue a new set of criteria with separate criteria for special groups of students (such as monks, students with disabilities). Meanwhile, Mr. Vu Khac Gia Bao (Association of Vietnamese Students in Australia) said that it is necessary to take into account special factors for Vietnamese students studying abroad.

Mr. Bao said that students have quite a lot of difficulties when participating in the movement. These include difficulties in terms of time and study pressure, difficulties in maintaining connections with the Vietnamese community, and difficulties in communicating and accessing information about the movement, so it is rare to meet all the criteria of the "5 Good Students" movement.

Therefore, Student Unions at all levels need to be more flexible in their evaluation criteria to suit the conditions of students studying abroad.

"In addition to the criteria of good study and good physical strength, the two criteria of good volunteering and good integration should be applied to the participation in maintaining and developing the Vietnamese community abroad and supporting new students studying abroad in the host country as the basis for evaluation," Mr. Gia Bao suggested.

Recognizing student efforts

Secretary of the Central Youth Union - President of the Vietnam Student Association Nguyen Minh Triet said that while there are still students who do not see the value of the title "5 Good Students", partly because some places are still confused about finding solutions to implement and organize activities to create an environment for students to practice and strive.

While the training programs of schools are increasingly shortened, forcing students to focus on completing credits, paying little attention to the movement. Not to mention the communication of the value of this title to students is not really good. Therefore, the requirement is to organize a widespread movement but must find excellent factors to gradually improve the quality and standards of the movement.

"Units need to have a way to recognize students' efforts. For example, a first-year student has only achieved a few criteria but is conscious of training and striving to achieve this title. The task of the Association is to fully recognize the results of the student's efforts and training," said Mr. Triet.

1,094 "5 Good Students" at the central level

"5 Good Students" is a noble title for Vietnamese students, initiated and implemented by the Vietnam Student Association for many years with five criteria: good ethics, good study, good physical strength, good volunteering and good integration.

Up to now, nearly 2.05 million students have registered to practice and strive to achieve the title of "5 Good Students". As a result, 99,327 students have achieved the title of "5 Good Students" at the school level, more than 9,900 students have achieved the title at the provincial level and 1,094 students have achieved this title at the central level.
