Zverev was eliminated by the 72nd ranked player in the first round of Wimbledon

French tennis player Arthur Rinderknech caused a big shock at Wimbledon 2025 when he defeated third seed Alexander Zverev after 5 thrilling sets.

The match was interrupted by a curfew at 11 p.m., with the two players tied 1-1. When the match resumed, Rinderknech came out on top, winning the third and fifth sets to close out the match 7-6(3), 6-7(8), 6-3, 6-7(5), 6-4 after 4 hours and 44 minutes.

On the third match point, Rinderknech hit a precise cross-court backhand to defeat Zverev, before collapsing to the court in emotion.

This was the first time in his career he had won against a player in the world's top 5. "I don't know where to start. My legs are still shaking. It's amazing," he shared after the match.

Zverev reached the Stuttgart final and the Halle semi-finals, but once again missed out on a Grand Slam title.

He becomes the next top 10 player to be eliminated early at Wimbledon 2025, following Medvedev, Rune and Musetti. In the second round, Rinderknech will meet Cristian Garin.
