100 dishes and drinks made from sweet potatoes

Through the contest, contribute to honoring and promoting the material and spiritual cultural values of sweet potato.

This is an activity within the series of activities of the 3rd Vinh Long Provincial Tourism Festival. The contest attracted 20 teams from agencies, organizations in Binh Tan district and members of the Provincial Women's Union.

Binh Tan District is one of 8 districts, towns and cities of Vinh Long province, known as the "sweet potato capital" with popular potato varieties such as: Milk potato, Sweet pumpkin potato, Purple potato, White paper potato. Sweet potato has taken root in Binh Tan for decades, contributing to creating high economic income conditions for the people. With the determination of the government and people, Binh Tan sweet potato has also affirmed its brand and reached out to the international market.

Binh Tan sweet potatoes are also used to prepare delicious dishes, and have become popular in people's daily lives from sweet to savory dishes. Sweet potato plants from tubers to shoots, through the skillful hands of Vinh Long people, can become delicious dishes on daily meals. Besides the role of being a food source, export product and creating typical OCOP products of the province, Vinh Long also aims to develop tourism associated with potato fields, delicious dishes made from potatoes...

Sweet potatoes are processed into many delicious and beautiful dishes.

Sweet and rich Binh Tan sweet potatoes, through the talented hands of the contestants, are processed into extremely attractive dishes such as sweet soups; steamed sweet potato cakes, Happiness cakes, sweet potato sweet soup, sweet potato floating water, sweet potato with coconut, sweet potato shake, sweet potato phu the cake, quai vac cake, coconut baked sweet potatoes, cheese-wrapped sweet potatoes, sweet potato jelly, sweet potato yogurt, etc.

Savory dishes include sweet potato and shrimp noodle soup, sweet potato with raw fish sauce, sweet potato and duck curry, sweet potato salad, sweet potato soup, stir-fried sweet potato leaves with garlic, boiled sweet potato leaves, sweet potato leaves cooked in sour soup, sweet potato and mussel soup, sweet potato and crab porridge, sweet potato and shrimp porridge, sweet potato with bay laurel sauce, sweet potato cooked in green curry and banana, mashed sweet potato with shrimp sauteed with rosemary leaves, mashed sweet potato with chicken sauteed with lemon leaf sauce, etc.

In addition, instant packaged products such as honey-dried sweet potato, seaweed-dried sweet potato, roasted sweet potato with onion and garlic, BBQ sweet potato cake, sweet potato wine, sweet potato milk, etc., along with packaged products that need to be processed such as purple sweet potato powder, cereal sweet potato powder, sweet potato noodle powder, etc. are also displayed at the festival.

After the process of monitoring, counting and evaluating, the representative of the Supervisory Board of the Vietnam Record Organization (VietKings) recorded the total number of dishes made from Binh Tan Sweet Potato at the event as 100 dishes, made by 20 teams. The number of dishes that met the target, along with the elaborate processing process, beautifully presented and delicious dishes, officially helped the People's Committee of Binh Tan District (Vinh Long Province) successfully set a Vietnam Record with the content "The event of processing and performing the most dishes and drinks from Binh Tan Sweet Potato (Vinh Long) in Vietnam (100 dishes)".

Mr. Phan Van Giau, Director of the Department of Culture, Sports and Tourism of Vinh Long province, informed that over the past decades, people in Binh Tan district have converted part of their rice-growing land to sweet potato varieties that bring high economic efficiency. This place concentrates many famous potato varieties such as pumpkin sweet potato, milky white sweet potato, pearl sweet potato, Japanese purple sweet potato... Binh Tan district currently has the largest sweet potato growing area in the Mekong Delta with more than 10,000 hectares/year, with an average output of over 300,000 tons/year, so this place is also known as the "Kingdom of Sweet Potatoes".

Inspired by the main agricultural product of Binh Tan district as well as Vinh Long province, sweet potato, the contest "Delicious dishes made from Binh Tan sweet potato" was held for the first time at the provincial level with the mandatory requirement of using sweet potato in processing and decorating dishes.

Vietnam Record Organization awarded the Vietnam Record Certificate to the representative of Binh Tan District People's Committee, Vinh Long Province.

“With this contest, we hope to contribute to honoring and promoting the material and spiritual cultural values of sweet potatoes, which have been closely associated with the people and homeland of Vinh Long, in order to develop sweet potatoes in a multi-value form. In addition, the contest also creates a useful playground, creates conditions for exchange and promotes creativity for those who love cuisine, an opportunity for chefs to show their creativity, acting as a “culinary ambassador” to convey the values of homeland cuisine to international friends. Thereby, creating a joyful atmosphere in the province's Tourism Festival, creating a healthy, beneficial cultural environment, imbued with national identity”, Mr. Phan Van Giau emphasized.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Quyen Thanh, Vice Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee said: "The establishment of the Vietnam record of 100 dishes made from Binh Tan sweet potatoes in today's festival has the salty taste from the hard sweat of farmers cultivating fertile sweet potato fields; the sweet, delicious taste of the alluvial soil that nature bestows; the characteristic purple color that makes friends everywhere nostalgic when remembering Binh Tan Japanese purple sweet potatoes and the unlimited creativity...

Setting the record is both to respect the inherent spirit of hard work and diligence of farmers in Vinh Long land with a history of over 300 years, and to affirm that the fruits of labor are always honored, always bringing new values suitable for the development of life, enriching the material life and culinary enjoyment of the people.
