Yesterday (December 17), the Chairman of the People's Committee of Bac Ha district, Lao Cai province, issued a decision to temporarily suspend the Principal of Hoang Thu Pho 1 Primary Boarding School for Ethnic Minorities for 15 days to serve the investigation and verification of information related to the meals for students at this school.
Previously, social networks were abuzz with outrage over a teacher's reflection on the poor quality of the meals provided to 178 boarding students.
Specifically, there was an image of 11 children fighting over 2 packs of instant noodles cooked thinly with rice on each tray. Even though the menu and financial disclosure clearly stated that 178 boarding students were entitled to a breakfast of 1 pack of instant noodles and 1 egg each.
Not only is there not enough meat and fish, even cheap things like vegetables for students to eat are rotten and spoiled.
What’s worse is that not only is there a lack of food, there’s also not enough toilet paper. And many students in the school have come up with the idea of using chayote leaves, which are readily available in the schoolyard, instead of toilet paper…
Immediately after receiving the information, the Chairman of Lao Cai Provincial People's Committee issued a document requesting the Bac Ha District People's Committee and related departments and branches to promptly clarify the incident. The Bac Ha District People's Committee also immediately held an urgent meeting, organized an inspection team and temporarily suspended the principal for verification and investigation.
These are quick, timely, drastic and very welcome actions of the authorities at all levels of Lao Cai province.
According to regulations, each boarding student receives a government subsidy of 720,000 VND for meals and 15 kg of rice per month. Of course, with this amount of money, one cannot eat delicious food. But to have students eat like 11 children fighting over 2 packs of instant noodles cooked thinly with rice or rotten vegetables is unacceptable. Because it is too unreasonable, too "unexpected" as Mr. Tran Van Cuong, Chairman of the People's Committee of Hoang Thu Pho commune said.
This incident will certainly be clarified and strictly handled. However, we still hope that this is just a “shortcoming” in management as justified by Mr. Tran Ngoc Ha during the meeting with the inspection team. If it is the consequence of the act of reducing food rations by those responsible for this school, it is too terrible.
But even with mere "shortcomings" in management, such "shortcomings" are not convincing to public opinion and need to be dealt with as severely as possible to set an example.
It is sad and confusing that such scandals about cutting corners and signs of cutting corners like this are not uncommon in areas with centralized kitchens, from sports to education.
And in fact, from the incidents related to eating that have happened, it is the "word of mouth" that is the most frightening thing because it is difficult to wash away, not the disciplinary action, suspension from office, dismissal, or expulsion...
