131 times donating blood and platelets, the young man quietly does charity work despite being labeled a clown

Once sharing on his personal Facebook page when he reached the milestone of 100 successful platelet donations, Mr. Nguyen Van Thanh (28 years old, Me Linh, Hanoi ) received skeptical comments 'how can you donate that many times?' and was labeled as a 'poster'.

"Since then, I have rarely shared about voluntary blood donation and platelet donation on social networks. I just do it quietly," Thanh confided.

Mr. Thanh said that in the community today, "donating platelets" is still a fairly new term, many people only know about donating whole blood. With whole blood donation, each person can donate up to 3 months/1 time. As for donating platelets (a component of blood), they can donate once every 3 weeks.

That's why, even though he has been donating platelets for 10 years, Mr. Thanh has successfully donated blood and platelets more than 100 times.

Talking about the motivation that makes him maintain this charity work, Mr. Thanh shared that in 2017 he had a traffic accident and had to be treated at Viet Duc Hospital. At that time, he lost a lot of blood and had to have a blood transfusion.

"During the days in the hospital, witnessing accident victims, for many patients at that time blood was the only source of life, if they did not receive a blood transfusion they would probably not survive. I realized how donating blood helps patients survive" - ​​he expressed.

After being discharged from the hospital and returning to daily life, Mr. Thanh continued to maintain his habit of donating blood and platelets.

Every month, Mr. Thanh travels 30km to the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion to donate platelets. Compared to donating blood, donating platelets has "stricter" standards. Because of that, he is self-conscious about taking better care of his health.

"Once I went to the hospital to donate platelets but because I didn't meet the criteria, I had to return. At that time, I didn't know that eating a lot of protein would prevent me from donating platelets. From then on, I learned to eat lightly, not drink alcohol, go to bed early... so as not to be "disqualified" again," Mr. Thanh said with a smile.

As of October 2024, he has donated blood and platelets 131 times. He is also an outstanding platelet donor honored by the National Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion for 4 consecutive years.

Every day, there are many young people like Mr. Thanh who silently choose to live a good life and do good deeds to help patients in need of blood.
