Ministry of Health investigates case of hundreds of people poisoned after eating bread in Ho Chi Minh City

Regarding the suspected food poisoning case that caused 235 people to be hospitalized at 13 hospitals after eating bread in Ho Chi Minh City, on November 10, the Department of Food Safety (Ministry of Health) sent a document to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety regarding the investigation and handling of the suspected food poisoning case.

The document of the Food Safety Department stated that on November 7, 2025, in Hanh Thong ward, Ho Chi Minh City, a number of people were hospitalized for suspected food poisoning after eating bread.

Immediately after the incident, the Food Safety Department coordinated with the Ho Chi Minh City Food Safety Department to request a quick report on the poisoning incident, closely monitor the situation and deploy solutions to ensure the health of the poisoned people and prevent similar incidents from happening.

The Food Safety Department requested the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to investigate and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food suspected of causing poisoning...

At the same time, the Food Safety Department requested localities to require hospitals treating patients to focus resources and provide intensive care to ensure the safety of patients' lives and health.

Organize investigations and trace the origin of food to clearly identify the source of raw materials and food suspected of causing poisoning; take food and disease samples for testing to find the cause; investigate and strictly handle violations of food safety regulations (if any), and publicize the results to promptly warn the community.

To prevent similar incidents from happening, the Food Safety Department requests the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Food Safety to continue to strictly implement the instructions of the Ministry of Health in Official Dispatch No. 2633/BYT-ATTP dated April 30, 2025 on strengthening food safety, preventing and combating fake food and food poisoning;

Official Dispatch No. 7598/BYT-ATTP dated October 20, 2025 on ensuring food safety in schools and collective kitchens and Official Dispatch No. 271/ATTP-NDTT dated February 18, 2025 on ensuring food safety and preventing foodborne diseases.

At the same time, localities need to strengthen propaganda and guidance for food service establishments to ensure food safety conditions, strictly control the origin and source of food ingredients, ensure hygiene during the process of preliminary processing, processing, transporting food, three-step food inspection, and keeping food samples. Propaganda for people in choosing food as well as food processing service establishments serving crowded events.

Regarding this poisoning incident, on November 10, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Health informed that as of 8:00 a.m. on November 10, 235 cases had been recorded for emergency hospitalization at 13 hospitals; of which 139 cases had been discharged and monitored as outpatients, while 96 cases were still being treated as inpatients.

Most of the cases admitted to the emergency room showed signs of vomiting, fever, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Currently, the health of most of the poisoned patients has stabilized, some have been discharged, the rest continue to be treated according to the regimen issued by the Department of Health. The blood culture results of a victim treated at Gia Dinh People's Hospital were positive for Salmonella - bacteria that cause gastrointestinal infections and are a common cause of food poisoning.
