On November 10, Dr. Pham Thanh Viet - Deputy Director in charge of management and operation of Cho Ray Hospital - said that within just three days (from November 7 to 9), the hospital's medical staff worked continuously, day and night, without weekends off to promptly receive two organ donation and transplant operations, bringing life to seven patients, including two heart transplants, four kidney transplants and one lung transplant.
In particular, this organ donation and transplant operation also marked a special milestone for the first lung transplant at Cho Ray Hospital, which is also the first lung transplant in the Southern region.
"That success comes not only from the dedication and constant efforts of the entire medical team, but also thanks to the close and smooth coordination between agencies, departments and sectors in the coordination and timely transport of organs to hospitals in all three regions of the country," Mr. Viet shared.
The first case is a 49-year-old male patient, residing in Ho Chi Minh City, who was transferred to Cho Ray Hospital on November 5 with severe traumatic brain injury due to a domestic accident.
Despite the efforts of doctors and nurses to save him, the patient did not survive. His family decided to donate his heart, lungs, two kidneys and two corneas to save others in need of organ transplants.
Immediately afterwards, Cho Ray Hospital reported to the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center to select a suitable patient and urgently perform the transplant overnight.
By the early morning of November 8, four transplants at Cho Ray were successful, bringing life to many people: a male patient (born in 1972, Can Tho ) received a heart transplant, two patients including a female (born in 1977, Dong Nai) and a male (born in 1985, Dong Thap) received a kidney transplant.
In particular, the lung transplant for a male patient (born in 1986, Ho Chi Minh City) marked a historic milestone, becoming the first lung transplant performed in the Southern region. At the same time, two corneas were transferred to Hue Central Hospital and successfully transplanted to two other patients.
Having just completed the task of bringing the donor home, on the night of November 7, Cho Ray Hospital continued to receive information about a potential organ donation case at Ba Ria General Hospital.
The donor was a 32-year-old male patient from Long Hai commune who suffered a severe traumatic brain injury due to a traffic accident. When it was determined that there was no chance of cure, his family voluntarily donated his heart, lungs, liver and two kidneys to save other patients.
Cho Ray Hospital coordinated with the National Organ Transplant Coordination Center to coordinate the organ source: heart and two kidneys for Cho Ray, liver divided in half for Hue Central Hospital and University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, lungs transferred to the Central Lung Institute.
The relevant units (from the National Coordination Center, Ba Ria Hospital, traffic police to the airline) coordinated smoothly, helping to transport the heart to Cho Ray Hospital in just 64 minutes, promptly transplanting it to the heart failure patient.
A turning point in the field of organ donation and transplantation in the Southern region
Cho Ray Hospital believes that the success of two consecutive organ donations not only reflects the expertise, dedication and smooth coordination between medical facilities, but is also a living testament to the humane value of organ donation.
In particular, the first lung transplant at Cho Ray Hospital marked an important step forward in improving the professional skills of the medical team, opening a turning point in the field of organ donation and transplantation in the Southern region and creating the premise for "miracles of resurrection", bringing a chance of life to many patients who are fighting the disease day and night.
