Breakthrough therapy eliminates cancer in just 3 months

A new drug delivery device has produced impressive results: Completely eliminating bladder tumors in more than 80% of cancer patients who had failed to respond to previous treatments.

The study was conducted by doctors at the University of Southern California (USC, USA) and published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology .

Bladder cancer is a common cancer, especially in older people. In "high risk" cases, the disease is likely to recur or spread. The usual treatment is the immunotherapy drug BCG, but if it is not effective, the patient often has to have surgery to remove the bladder, causing many complications and reducing the quality of life.

To find a new direction, scientists tested the TAR-200 device on 85 patients in many locations around the world, including Keck Hospital (USA). This is a small, spiral-shaped device, placed into the bladder through a catheter, containing the chemotherapy drug Gemcitabine, according to the science news site Scitech Daily.

The TAR-200 device is special because it releases the drug slowly over 3 weeks, allowing the drug to stay in the bladder longer and kill cancer cells more effectively. Previously, the drug was only pumped into the bladder for a few hours, so the effectiveness was not high.

The results showed that after 3 months of treatment, up to 82% of patients no longer had tumors. And nearly half still maintained this result after a year. This method also has few side effects and helps patients avoid surgery, according to Scitech Daily .

The longer the drug stays in the bladder, the deeper it penetrates and kills more cancer cells, said Dr. Sia Daneshmand, who led the study. The results showed that this was a superior method.

The results also showed that using the new therapy alone was more effective and had fewer side effects than combining it with the immunotherapy drug Cetrelimab.

According to Dr. Daneshmand, this is a major step forward in bladder cancer treatment, opening up hope for patients who do not respond to previous methods. The US Food and Drug Administration has now granted priority review to the new therapy TAR-200, helping to shorten the approval time and bring this method to patients sooner.
