On October 28, Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, said that the hospital had recently recorded a very rare case of cancer.
The patient is Mr. Th. (53 years old, living in Tay Ninh province), who came to the hospital because of hoarseness. Medical history shows that the patient's condition had lasted for more than 6 months.
The patient underwent endoscopic biopsy of the right vocal cord, and the biopsy results showed that the tumor was grade 2 squamous cell carcinoma (cancer with cells of moderate differentiation).
After the pathology results were available, the man underwent further tests to prepare for surgery to remove the laryngeal cancer, but was diagnosed with papillary thyroid carcinoma through ultrasound and specialized tests.

The patient was diagnosed with both laryngeal cancer and early stage thyroid cancer. The treatment team performed simultaneous surgery on both sites, including right lobectomy, thyroid isthmus resection, vertical partial laryngectomy, and selective neck lymph node dissection. Postoperatively, the patient continued treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain relievers.
According to Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, this is a very rare case even on a world scale, because the cancer is separate in two different organs and has a different histological nature.
Treatment requires surgery to remove tumors in two organs at the same time as well as detailed post-operative chemotherapy and radiotherapy and monitoring, specific to each type of cancer.
In the above case, the surgery was performed using an ultrasonic knife. This is a new surgical technique, no bleeding, and quick post-operative healing.
Doctors recommend that early stage thyroid cancer often has no symptoms, so screening and regular health check-ups are extremely important.
"When hoarseness lasts for more than 2 weeks and medical treatment does not improve, people should go to an ENT specialist to be screened for laryngeal cancer," the Director of the ENT Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City recommends.
