On October 28th, Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital, announced that the hospital had recently recorded a very rare case of cancer.
The patient, Mr. Th. (53 years old, residing in Tay Ninh province), came to the hospital for examination due to hoarseness. Upon taking his medical history, it was revealed that the patient's condition had lasted for more than 6 months prior to this visit.
The patient underwent endoscopic biopsy of the right vocal cord, and the biopsy results showed a tumor identified as grade 2 squamous cell carcinoma (cancer with moderately differentiated cells).
After receiving the pathology results, the man underwent further tests in preparation for surgery to remove laryngeal cancer, but was found to have papillary thyroid carcinoma through ultrasound and other specialized tests.

The patient was diagnosed with both early-stage laryngeal and thyroid cancer. The surgical team performed simultaneous surgery on both sites, including right lobectomy, isthmus resection, and vertical partial laryngectomy, along with selective cervical lymph node dissection. Postoperatively, the patient continued treatment with antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, and pain relievers.
According to Dr. Le Tran Quang Minh, this is a very rare case, even globally , because the cancer is isolated in two different organs with different histological characteristics.
Treatment requires surgical removal of tumors in two organs simultaneously, as well as chemotherapy, radiation therapy, and detailed, specialized post-operative monitoring tailored to each type of cancer.
In the aforementioned case, the surgery was performed using an ultrasonic scalpel. This is a new surgical technique that is bloodless and allows for rapid post-operative healing.
Doctors advise that early-stage thyroid cancer often has no symptoms, so regular screening and health check-ups are extremely important.
"If hoarseness persists for more than two weeks without improvement with medical treatment, people should visit a specialized ENT clinic for laryngeal cancer screening," advised the Director of the Ho Chi Minh City ENT Hospital.
