Overview of the main arterial route in Can Gio

Rung Sac Road is a unique traffic axis, playing a strategic role in connecting Can Gio island district with the rest of Ho Chi Minh City. This route is 36.5 km long, starting from Binh Khanh ferry, passing through the mangrove biosphere reserve and ending at the 30/4 beach resort .

Rung Sac Road is the main traffic route running along Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City.
Rung Sac Road is the main traffic route running along the old Can Gio district, Ho Chi Minh City. This route starts from Binh Khanh ferry terminal on the Can Gio bank, runs along the northwest - southeast axis through residential areas, aquaculture areas and mangrove forests, and ends at the intersection leading to the 30/4 beach resort. The route is currently the only route to access the Can Gio area and the Can Gio sea encroachment resort (Vinhomes Green Paradise).

Officially inaugurated in 2011 with a total investment of 1,420 billion VND, Rung Sac Road currently has a scale of 6 lanes, 30 m wide. However, after more than a decade of exploitation, some items on the route no longer meet the development needs, especially the bridge system.

The road is 36.5 km long, 30 m wide with 6 lanes, including two construction phases for three road segments. The segment from the ferry terminal to Nhon Trach intersection (going under the current Ben Luc - Long Thanh expressway), with phase 1 including 4 lanes, 23.5 - 30 m wide; phase 2 increases to 6 lanes, 30 m wide.

Current status and "bottlenecks"

The biggest problem on the Rung Sac route today is the lack of synchronization between the road surface and the bridges. The entire route has 8 main bridges including Rach La, An Nghia, Nong Truong Quan 5, Rach Don, Loi Gianh, Long Giang Xay, Dan Xay and Ha Thanh.

The route passes through the current Can Gio mangrove forest area. Along the entire Sac Forest route, there are eight bridges, in order from north to south including Rach La, An Nghia, Nong Truong Quan 5, Rach Don, Loi Gianh, Long Giang Xay, Dan Xay and Ha Thanh.

While the road surface is 30 m wide (6 lanes), the width of these bridges is only about 12 m, creating "bottlenecks" that hinder traffic. This situation is expected to become more serious when large projects such as Can Gio Bridge are built, increasing traffic volume.

A narrow bridge on Rung Sac road, not yet synchronized with the 6-lane wide road surface.
Currently, the bridges on Rung Sac Street have a narrow surface with a width of about 12 m, not synchronized with the existing Rung Sac Street with 6 lanes (30 m). In the future, when Can Gio Bridge is formed, the bridges on Rung Sac Street will be at risk of congestion, creating bottlenecks on the main traffic route. The Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City once said that in the Investment Plan for developing key transport projects and works prioritized for implementation in the period of 2024 - 2030, the Department has proposed upgrading 8 bridges on Rung Sac Street.

Details of the upgrade plan for the period 2024-2027

To address the above issues, Ho Chi Minh City has approved a comprehensive upgrade plan for Rung Sac Road and 8 bridges with a total estimated investment of VND 3,850 billion, to be implemented in the period 2024 - 2027. The plan includes two main components:

  • Upgrading 8 bridges: With a budget of 3,400 billion VND, the city will invest in building 8 new bridge units parallel to the existing bridges. Each new unit will be nearly 16 m wide, including 3 car lanes and 1 bicycle lane. At the same time, 8 old bridges will also be renovated to ensure uniformity in scale and load capacity.
  • Expanding Rung Sac Road: 450 billion VND will be used to upgrade and expand the road with a length of about 40 km.
The current state of a bridge on Rung Sac road has only one unit.
Currently, the 8 bridges on Rung Sac Street are narrow, about 12 m wide, not in sync with the 30 m wide Rung Sac Street. Previously, these bridges were only built as one bridge unit. Accordingly, from now until 2027, Ho Chi Minh City will invest in completing 8 more bridge units on Rung Sac Street. These 8 bridges will be nearly 16 m wide, with 3 car lanes and 1 bicycle lane. At the same time, 8 existing bridges on Rung Sac Street will be renovated, with a total investment of 3,400 billion VND.

Motivation from future mega projects

The investment in upgrading Rung Sac Road is considered a strategic step, anticipating large-scale projects in Can Gio. The main goal is to serve the Can Gio International Transit Port and the Vinhomes Green Paradise coastal tourism urban area.

Sac Forest Road is the main connection route to Can Gio sea encroachment tourist area.
The route connecting to the current construction area of Can Gio sea encroachment tourist area (Vinhomes Green Paradise). According to the representative of the former Department of Transport of Ho Chi Minh City, the city decided to prioritize investment in roads and bridges on Rung Sac road to serve the future Can Gio international transit port and the plan to develop the Can Gio district traffic network in the period 2023 - 2030. In the coming time, Can Gio bridge will also start construction, Ho Chi Minh City will also invest in the 15B road axis of Nha Be district. Therefore, the investment in upgrading Rung Sac road is timely, creating a synchronous connection for the North - South axis of Ho Chi Minh City.

Vinhomes Green Paradise project developed by Vingroup has a scale of 2,870 hectares, oriented to become an international tourist urban area with the capacity to welcome nearly 9 million visitors per year. Synchronous traffic infrastructure is a prerequisite to realize the potential of these projects, contributing to creating a strong economic - tourism development axis in the North - South direction of the city.

Vinhomes Green Paradise is under construction, this is the project with the largest sea encroachment area in Vietnam, developed by Vingroup with a scale of 2,870 hectares. In nature, this will be an international-class tourist urban area with the capacity to receive about 8.9 million visitors per year. The total investment in the sea encroachment part (construction of embankments, leveling) is 65,609.5 billion VND; the total investment in technical infrastructure is 32,516 billion VND; the total investment in architectural works is 184,707 billion VND.
