At the Wonderlust event, Apple introduced the new iPhone 15 quartet with some notable upgrades such as Dynamic Island and 48MP camera on iPhone 15, 15 Plus; USB-C charging port; A17 Pro chip and titanium frame on iPhone 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max. In addition, iPhone 15 Pro Max has 5x optical zoom capability instead of 3x like the previous generation.
However, they are not enough to convince iPhone 14 users to upgrade to iPhone 15. There are 5 reasons why you should wait for iPhone 16 instead of buying iPhone 15 right now.
New solid state button
Before the iPhone 15 was released, there were rumors that Apple would change the way the volume buttons worked. Instead of a physical button, the “bitten apple” was said to switch to a solid-state button. However, some reports later indicated that Apple had technical problems, leading the company to scrap this plan on the iPhone 15. All iPhone 15 models retain the physical volume buttons, only the mute switch is replaced by an Action button on the 15 Pro.
However, it is very possible that Apple will find a solution and bring the solid-state button to the iPhone 16 Pro in 2024. In addition, since the company tends to bring the features of this year's Pro version to the standard version next year, it is not surprising that the iPhone 16 and 16 Plus may have an Action button.
Face ID under screen
Many people are waiting for Apple to put the fingerprint sensor or Face ID under the screen. Analyst Ming Chi Kuo predicts that from 2024, the front camera and Face ID on the iPhone Pro will be embedded in the screen. This means the iPhone Pro screen will no longer have a notch or Dynamic Island like before.
Display expert Ross Young and Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman agree with Kuo but give a further timeline, around 2025 for the iPhone 17.
More RAM and better performance
The iPhone 16 will definitely have a better chip, at least on the Pro version. Next year, the A17 chip may appear on the regular iPhone 16, while the A18 is reserved for the iPhone 17 Pro. Not only the chip, the RAM in next year's iPhones will also be upgraded, for example from 6GB to 8GB. More RAM means better performance.
The beginning of the iPhone Ultra era?
A few weeks before the iPhone 15 was announced, rumors swirled that Apple would rebrand the Pro Max as Ultra. While the Wonderlust event confirmed that the rumors were false, it doesn’t mean it can’t happen. The iPhone 16 could be the start of the iPhone Ultra era with significant upgrades.
New telephoto camera for 16 Pro
One of the disappointments of the iPhone 15 Pro is that only the iPhone 15 Pro Max gets a camera upgrade, allowing for 5x optical zoom. The iPhone 15 Pro retains 3x optical zoom. This could change with the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max.
In particular, the iPhone 16 Pro Max is rumored to use a periscope lens with telephoto capabilities not inferior to its rival Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.
