50 years of national reunification: University of the Philippines holds conference on Vietnam

Philippine scholars discuss the long-term resistance war with the Great Victory in Spring 1975 - a brilliant milestone, one of the most glorious feats in the history of building and defending the country of the Vietnamese people.

On April 25, the Alternative Development Program of the University of the Philippines Center for Integrative and Development Studies (UP CIDS), in collaboration with the Philippine-Vietnam Solidarity Committee and several other organizations, co-organized the Workshop “The Vietnam War and its Impact on the Philippines and Social Movements: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of Vietnam’s Unification”.

This is an important academic event when held in the context of Vietnam towards the 50th anniversary of the Liberation of the South and National Reunification (April 30, 1975 - April 30, 2025).

The event attracted many experts and researchers who attended and spoke at the Conference: such as Mr. Walden Bello, a famous activist and scholar on globalization and development issues; Ms. Noel Christian Moratilla, a researcher on international relations and regional history; Ms. Ana Maria R. Nemenzo, from WomanHealth, focusing on women's health and rights issues; along with members of organizations and students from the University of the Philippines. At the invitation of the Organizing Committee, Vietnamese Ambassador to the Philippines Lai Thai Binh also attended and spoke at the event.

The workshop focused on discussing the importance of the anti-American resistance war based on specific data. Speakers emphasized the historical role and inspiration of the resistance war, especially the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh , hailed as a “ great thinker ” and a symbol of nationalism and internationalism.

The speakers also focused on discussing Vietnam's recovery and development after the war, highly appreciating the transformation from a war-torn country into one of Asia's leading economies , recognized for its high standard of living, ranking second in Southeast Asia and third in Asia...

In particular, speakers emphasized the war's impact on global and regional movements, especially the 1968 Tet Offensive and Uprising, which was seen as an inspiration for oppressed nations in Africa, the Americas, and Asia, as well as the anti-war movement in the Philippines.

Dr. Noelle Moratilla hopes that Vietnam will translate and share war literature and poetry into English to enhance understanding between Filipinos and Vietnamese, and enhance cultural and historical exchanges between the two countries.

Speaking at the workshop, Ambassador Lai Thai Binh emphasized the significance of the Vietnamese people's resistance war for independence, the achievements in the Doi Moi process, the application of successful lessons from both periods in Vietnam's foreign policy as well as in promoting international integration and strengthening Vietnam-Philippines relations.

The event concluded with UP CIDS handing over research papers to the Vietnamese Embassy, ​​demonstrating academic cooperation and mutual respect.
