FIFA has just confirmed that the AFF Cup 2024 is an official friendly tournament under the FIFA system. All matches of the tournament are considered international matches of category A level 1 from this year. According to FIFA regulations, these matches are equivalent to official friendly matches during the FIFA Days period.
This means that national teams will be able to call up their best players without worrying about clubs rejecting them. The list of teams will be submitted to the FIFA Secretariat and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).
Many other regulations on referees, time between two consecutive matches, and organizational standards have all been significantly improved.
AFF Cup 2024 is recognized as an official friendly tournament.
In addition to level 1 international friendly matches, FIFA also has many level 2 and 3 international matches such as World Cup, Asian Cup, EURO qualifiers or the finals of these tournaments.
In the case of the 2024 AFF Cup, FIFA's late announcement has left many teams in the region in a passive position. Previously, the preliminary list of 50 players was finalized by the Southeast Asian Football Federation on November 17. Now, teams do not have the right to add players. Indonesia, with many players playing in Europe, cannot return to compete in the AFF Cup.
Coach Shin Tae-yong only called up 3 players including Rafael Struick, Ivar Jenner and Justin Hubner. At this point, only Rafael Struick is certain to play in the group stage. Malaysia and Singapore are 2 countries that also lost many key players because the teams refused to release their players.
The 2024 AFF Cup (ASEAN Cup) will take place from December 8, 2024 to January 5, 2025. Group A includes Thailand, Timor Leste, Cambodia, Malaysia and Singapore. Group B includes Vietnam, Indonesia, the Philippines, Laos and Myanmar. The teams will play 2 home matches and 2 away matches in the group stage in a round-robin format. The first and second place teams in each group will advance to the semi-finals. The semi-finals and final will be played on a home and away format.
The two candidates for the championship this year are Thailand and Vietnam. Coach Kim Sang-sik and his team will play their opening match on December 9 against Laos.
