Who should not eat cold food in summer?

In the middle of a hot summer day, a glass of ice water or a cool ice cream can bring an instant feeling of comfort. However, behind that “cooling off” are many potential health risks, especially for people with weak constitutions or chronic diseases.

According to food safety experts, the hot summer makes many people seek out cold foods such as ice cream, shaved ice, ice water, or chilled drinks to relieve the feeling of heat. However, not everyone is suitable to eat cold foods, especially those with weak health or chronic diseases. Improper consumption of cold foods can cause more harm than temporary comfort.

People with weak digestive systems such as bloating, diarrhea, gastritis, etc., should not eat cold foods. Because cold foods easily constrict blood vessels in the stomach and intestines, affecting the digestive process.

People who often suffer from bloating, indigestion, and digestive disorders are more likely to have their condition worsened when consuming cold foods.

People with respiratory diseases such as pharyngitis, tonsillitis, asthma, etc., should also not eat cold foods. Cold foods can easily irritate the throat lining, causing inflammation or relapse of chronic respiratory diseases. Children or adults with a history of pharyngitis or bronchitis are susceptible to relapse when drinking ice water or eating ice cream.

The bodies of people with weak immune systems (children, the elderly, pregnant women) often have difficulty adapting to sudden changes in temperature. Therefore, eating cold food can cause hypothermia, leading to colds or intestinal infections.

In addition, for women during menstruation, eating cold foods can easily cause uterine contractions, leading to more menstrual cramps and affecting blood circulation. Especially, there are people who still have signs of cold in the summer such as cold hands and feet, fear of cold, loose stools...

So what should you eat to avoid affecting your body? Health experts recommend that instead of cold foods, you should choose foods that are refreshing, easy to digest, and rich in nutrients such as: Cool vegetables and fruits, watermelon, cucumber, dragon fruit, oranges, grapefruit, pennywort, bitter melon, fish mint... These foods not only help cool down but also provide water and vitamins necessary for the body during hot summer days.

You should prioritize using fresh fruit or juice, limit adding ice. In addition, soups with cooling properties such as green squash soup, spinach, chives, seaweed, etc. are also very good for the body, helping to cool down and support good digestion.

In addition, easily digestible, water-rich foods such as porridge, thin soup, vermicelli, pho soup, etc. are also suitable choices, helping the body retain water well in the summer.

According to experts, another equally important factor is drinking water properly. You should prioritize healthy drinks such as filtered water, ginseng water, cool water (gotu kola, artichoke, roasted black bean water, etc.), and drink them in small sips throughout the day. Avoid drinking ice water that is too cold, especially after strenuous exercise or just coming back from the sun, to avoid causing heat shock to the body.

To protect your health, if you are in the group that should not eat cold foods, be alert and do not let the “cold thirst” fool your health. Eating and drinking cold foods should be done in moderation, do not abuse it because it can cause long-term effects. Even healthy people should limit drinking too cold water, especially after exercising, bathing or after eating.
