Algeria accused France of launching a disinformation campaign and diplomatic escalation against Algeria through statements by French officials.
The incident occurred after Algiers refused to accept and deported an influential Algerian man back to France.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry 's accusation came in a statement responding to French Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau's accusation on January 9 against Algeria that it was seeking to humiliate France for refusing to accept the influential man.
According to the Algerian Foreign Ministry, the French far-right "conducted a disinformation campaign" against Algeria through members of the French government.
"Algeria has no intention of escalating... or humiliating" France, the statement said.
According to the statement, Paris failed to inform the relevant Algiers authorities about the influencer - known on social media as "Doualemn" - regarding his arrest or even the decision to expel him, violating the 1974 consular agreement between the two countries.
Doualemn, 59, was arrested by French authorities in the southern city of Montpellier after posting a controversial video on TikTok. His lawyer said he was flown to Algeria on January 9, but was returned to France the same evening after Algeria refused entry.
Speaking on LCI television, French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot threatened to restrict visas or development aid, saying France would have "no choice but to retaliate" if "the Algerians continue to escalate" the dispute.
For its part, the Algerian Foreign Ministry called the French detention and deportation of Doualemn arbitrary and abusive without trial. It added that its decision was "to allow him to answer the charges against him and to defend himself before the French judiciary" over allegations of spreading hate speech against members of the Algerian opposition.
The unprecedented crisis comes amid diplomatic tensions between Algiers and Paris, with Algeria accusing France of siding with Morocco in the conflict over Western Sahara.
Algeria, which supports the Polisario Front's call for self-determination in Western Sahara, opposes France's acceptance of Morocco's autonomy proposal.
Tensions reached a boiling point when Algeria arrested Franco-Algerian writer Boualem Sansal at Algiers airport on November 16.
