Stunning photo of skydiver in front of the sun

This moment a skydiver falls in front of the Sun is the world's first photograph taken in hydrogen alpha light.

Astrophotographer Andrew McCarthy captured the moment a skydiver jumped in front of the fiery surface of the Sun.

The work, titled "The Fall of Icarus," was described by McCarthy as "an incredibly absurd attempt" and may be the first photograph of its kind ever taken, according to Live Science.

McCarthy captured this moment at around 9am on November 8th (local time). To create the coincidence between the skydiver and the Sun disk, he planned for weeks and made six adjustments to the plane's position before everything aligned perfectly.

The person in the photo is YouTuber and musician Gabriel C. Brown. He jumped from a small propeller plane at an altitude of about 1,070 meters, nearly 2,500 meters from McCarthy's camera position.

On Instagram, Brown shared a behind-the-scenes look at the shoot, including a video of the two celebrating as the "golden" moment appeared on screen.

"You can see the excitement on my face in the video. Seeing the image perfectly displayed on the screen was really satisfying," McCarthy told Live Science.

McCarthy said the photo was taken on the first and only jump of the day. Repacking the parachute would have taken too long, so they only had one chance to take the shot.

The biggest challenge, he said, is that tracking planes in the sky is much more difficult than initially thought.

"I'm used to shooting the Sun, but this time it was beyond anything I've ever faced," he said.

This achievement was ranked by McCarthy as one of the top 5 most successful in his photography career.

Previously, he continuously attracted attention when capturing rare moments of the Sun, including a photo of the International Space Station (ISS) flying past at the same time as a solar flare appeared in June; a 1.6 million km long plasma column erupting from the surface; or an ultra-high resolution photo of the Moon and the moment Mars was eclipsed by the Moon.
