The ancient tea hill in Ngai Tro village, A Mu Sung commune, covers an area of about 21.5 hectares, with thousands of tea trees, owned by 71 households. According to the village elders, the ancient tea trees in Ngai Tro are estimated to be hundreds of years old, many trees have a base diameter of 40 - 50 cm and a height of over 5m.
To harvest ancient tea trees, Ngai Tro farmers must climb to the top of trees 3 - 7 meters high. Many people in Ngai Tro village have regular jobs picking tea for hire. The elderly are assigned to pick tea from low-canopy trees. Each day, people are paid 200,000 - 250,000 VND for picking tea.
The main harvest season of ancient tea trees in Ngai Tro lasts from April to October every year. In order to harvest the freshest, highest quality tea buds in time, people have to work hard every day. Men also have to carry their children up the hill to harvest ancient tea trees. Each kilogram of fresh tea costs from 25 - 260 thousand VND/kg. Each kilogram of ancient dry tea in Ngai Tro costs from 200 thousand to 2 million VND/kg.
The specialty dried tea in Ngai Tro costs up to 2 million VND/kg but sometimes it is still not enough to supply the market. It is estimated that each year, the people of Ngai Tro village earn about 1.4 billion from selling fresh tea buds. The ancient tea trees have contributed to increasing income and improving the lives of the people of Ngai Tro.
