Tropical depression causes level 9 wind gusts at sea, heavy rain of 300 mm on land

The tropical depression has moved into the Gulf of Tonkin. It is forecasted that from today, August 18 to August 20, the tropical depression circulation will cause heavy rain in the northeast and Thanh Hoa with rainfall of over 300 mm in some places.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting said that this morning, August 18, a tropical depression moved into the Gulf of Tonkin.

At 7:00 a.m., the center of the tropical depression was at about 18.8 degrees north latitude and 108.4 degrees east longitude, in the sea east of Bac Bo Gulf, about 135 km southeast of Bach Long Vi special zone.

The strongest wind near the center of the tropical depression is level 6 - level 7, equivalent to wind speed from 39 - 61 km/h, gusting to level 9; moving northwest at a speed of about 15 km/h.

Due to the influence of the tropical depression, the sea area east of the southern Quang Tri region, the Gulf of Tonkin, including the special zones of Bach Long Vi and Co To, has thunderstorms and strong winds of level 6 - level 7, gusting to level 9. Waves are 2 - 3.5 m high, and the sea is rough.

Accordingly, ships operating in the above-mentioned dangerous areas are likely to be affected by storms, strong winds, and large waves.

The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warns that due to the influence of a tropical depression, it is forecasted that from this afternoon, August 18, coastal areas from Quang Ninh and Hai Phong will have strong winds of level 6, gusting to level 8.

In addition, the circulation of the tropical depression will cause widespread heavy rain in the northeastern and central provinces lasting until August 20. It is forecasted that from today until August 20, the northeastern region and Thanh Hoa will have moderate rain, heavy rain and thunderstorms with common rainfall of 50 - 150 mm, in some places very heavy rain over 300 mm.

Today and tonight, Nghe An will have thunderstorms with average rainfall of 30 - 60 mm, some places will have very heavy rain over 120 mm. Ha Tinh and Quang Tri will have heavy rain, with average rainfall of 20 - 50 mm, some places will have very heavy rain over 100 mm.

Also according to the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, in the past 24 hours (from 4:00 a.m. on August 17 to 4:00 a.m. on August 18), the provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri had moderate rain, heavy rain, and some places had very heavy rain such as: Nhu Xuan (Thanh Hoa) 99.2 mm; Con Cuong (Nghe An) 129.6 mm; Son Hong 2 ( Ha Tinh ) 129.8 mm; Tan Lam (Quang Tri) 60.6 mm...

Weather forecast today, provinces from Thanh Hoa to Quang Tri continue to have rain with accumulated rainfall from 20 - 50 mm, some places over 70 mm.

Meanwhile, soil moisture models in many areas in the above provinces are nearly saturated (over 85%) or have reached a saturated state. The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting warned that today, many communes and wards in the four provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Tri are at risk of flash floods on rivers and small streams, and landslides in mountainous areas with steep terrain./.
