Apple has sent out an urgent warning about a spyware attack to iPhone users in 98 countries.

Apple has issued an urgent warning to iPhone users in 98 countries about a new wave of spyware attacks. Previously in April, the iPhone maker also sent a spyware warning to iPhone users in 92 countries that they were the target of attacks.

Apple has not provided much information about the latest attack and it is unclear which countries were affected. However, according to TechCrunch , some iPhone users in India have received the new notification.

“Apple has detected that you are the target of a spyware attack that is attempting to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with your Apple ID,” the alert reads.

Recent attacks believed to be linked to the Pegasus spyware have raised concerns among users, especially journalists and politicians in India. In November 2021, Apple filed a lawsuit against NSO Group over Pegasus, claiming that the program was used to “attack a small number of Apple users globally with malware and spyware.”

According to Apple’s website, the company has been issuing such emergency alerts since 2021 and has reached more than 150 countries. The alerts are sent directly to users who are the targets of the attacks.

Users should also take the following measures to prevent spyware attacks:

  • Stay away from public Wi-Fi: Public Wi-Fi networks pose many security risks, creating opportunities for hackers to attack your device.
  • Turn off accessory pairing when locked: This helps prevent unknown devices from connecting to your iPhone without permission.
  • Turn on Lockdown mode: This is the most powerful measure, helping to completely prevent spyware, especially for high-risk people such as journalists and politicians, although it affects the functionality of the iPhone.

In addition, iPhone users can also update to the latest version to patch security holes by going to Settings > General > Software Update, then download and follow the instructions.
