Malware is rampant, but leaders remain indifferent to cyber security

(Dan Tri) - Cyber security threats in Vietnam are not just numbers, the loopholes also come from the subjectivity of many units.

In the first six months of the year, a new wave of cyber attacks is sweeping across the world and Vietnam is no exception.

Ransomware and advanced persistent threat (APT) attacks are on the rise, targeting businesses and especially government organizations.

This situation is especially alarming when many unit leaders are still "underestimating" this potential danger.

At the seminar "TCVN 14423:2025 National standards on network security for important information systems" held on the afternoon of June 19, Lieutenant Colonel Le Xuan Thuy, Director of the National Cyber Security Center (Department A05, Ministry of Public Security) assessed that in the first 6 months of the year, ransomware and APT attacks have become a global threat and Vietnam is not out of that spiral.

“What is more worrying is that the scope of attacks is expanding, not only targeting businesses in the energy industry, hackers are also targeting essential national systems including state organizations and even the systems of press agencies,” Mr. Thuy informed.

This reality poses an urgent need to further enhance cybersecurity defense capabilities nationwide.

Although the cyber security situation is complicated, many units in Vietnam are still weak in receiving and processing early warning information.

The core problem that makes systems vulnerable to intrusion lies not only in the technical aspect, but also in the incorrect awareness and investment orientation of cybersecurity.

Lieutenant Colonel Le Xuan Thuy pointed out the weakness: "Awareness from leaders to cybersecurity specialists of many units is still not high.

They have not yet properly assessed the importance and level of risk from today's complex cyber attacks. This is a serious gap, when those who hold the power to make decisions have not yet fully seen the potential risks from the digital space."

This is the biggest loophole for cybercriminals to exploit.

Solutions to strengthen defense

To address the perception “gap” and enhance defense capabilities, the National Cyber Security Center is actively developing a set of guiding standards.

This set of standards will act as a "compass" to help organizations self-assess their existing defense capabilities, identify priorities for implementation, and quantify the state of system security at a specific level.

Along with that, Vietnam has applied artificial intelligence (AI) for the first time to the national cybersecurity competition.

Mr. Vu Ngoc Son, Head of Technology and International Cooperation, National Cyber Security Association (NCA) shared: "The competition is special because for the first time, AI is involved and students of any major can register to participate, not only domestic teams, but also students from ASEAN countries, Russia, Australia... this is an opportunity for members to have a chance to compete.

According to Mr. Son, students will participate in solving challenges revolving around exploiting vulnerabilities, decoding data, investigating numbers, reverse engineering... if AI is applied, it will be very fast, so we will set traps to fool AI, so that participants have skills.

This is an important step forward, demonstrating a proactive approach to equipping the next generation of cybersecurity professionals with the most advanced tools and skills to deal with increasingly sophisticated challenges.
