The 2030 World Cup will mark the 100th anniversary of the first World Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay. In a statement, CONMEBOL President Alejandro Dominguez said: "We believe that FIFA has an obligation to honor those who organized the first World Cup."

Alejandro Dominguez made the remarks while attending an unveiling event at the headquarters of the Argentine Football Federation (AFA) in Ezeiza, south of Buenos Aires.
Competition for the right to host the 2030 World Cup is intensifying ahead of FIFA's official selection of hosts in 2024. The main challenger for South American nations is a joint bid from Spain, Portugal and Ukraine, backed by UEFA. Saudi Arabia is also considering a joint bid with Egypt and Greece.
Last December, Mr Dominguez said FIFA should honour the legacy of South American football greats Pele and Diego Maradona by awarding the 2030 World Cup to the continent on its centenary.
South American fans are famous for their football fanaticism.

Uruguay were the first world champions in 1930, beating Argentina 4-2 in the 13-team World Cup final in Montevideo. Argentina are the current champions, having beaten France in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar last year.
The next World Cup will be held in 2026 in the United States, Mexico and Canada, the event will feature 48 teams for the first time, up from 32.
