Business partners because of common passion

The aquarium farm of three young men, Le Phuoc Cuong (27 years old), Van Ba Nghi and Phan Minh Thang (both 25 years old) is located on Phan Tu Street, Ngu Hanh Son District.

"Born in the countryside of Que Son ( Quang Nam ), I have had a hobby of raising fish since I was little. When I grew up, I was busy with work so I had to gradually put my passion aside," said Le Phuoc Cuong.

When meeting Nghi and Thang (both IT engineers and with stable jobs), Cuong and his two friends realized they had the same interests, so they decided to become friends, exchange experiences and techniques, and build a few experimental aquariums.

Going deep into the world of ornamental fish, three young men found that there were many people with the same interests and passion as them, so they decided to invest all their capital to build an "amateur" Guppy (guppies) fish farm.

"At that time, calling it a camp was a bit too much because we only had an old iron shelf bought online and a few styrofoam boxes to raise. Just like that, the passion grew, from the little things," Mr. Cuong recalled.

Guppies are considered "capricious young ladies and gentlemen" so they need to be taken care of quite carefully (Photo: Hoai Son).

When they first imported the fish to domesticate, the group did not know how to take care of them. In addition, the living environment changed, so many fish died. The ones that survived were not beautiful and of poor quality, so the selling price was only 5,000 VND/fish but no one bought them.

Undaunted, the three spent days and nights online learning and traveling to other farms to learn about the temperament of Guppy fish. Thanks to their perseverance, the group accumulated more and more experience. Then the trio of young men also grasped the secret to successfully caring for this "fickle" fish.

Currently, the farm has expanded to about 100 square meters and the three boys own 15 "hot" fish lines that are popular in the market such as Full Gold, Dumbo guppies (also known as elephant ear guppies) and some other guppies lines that are quite valuable.

In particular, the farm has a line of Purple Dragon Snakeskin guppy fish that a friend shared the "secret" of breeding.

Selecting standard fish for the rich

According to Mr. Cuong, raising guppies is quite difficult. Breeders need to always pay attention to the temperature and water environment because the fish are susceptible to disease when the weather changes.

In addition, it is necessary to regularly monitor to promptly detect fish with some diseases such as not eating, stunted growth to have a way to treat, otherwise the disease will spread quickly, leading to mass fish deaths.

"This species is considered a capricious "young lady" or "young master" so it needs to be taken care of quite carefully, right from the feeding stage. Their food is bo bo, bloodworms, flour and there are different feeding stages for good development," Mr. Cuong shared.

Guppies have a short lifespan, but in return they reproduce a lot. When the mother fish is in the right condition to reproduce, she will give birth every 25-35 days, on average each time she gives birth to 30-150 babies.

"After 1.5 months, the young fish will be sorted to select those with good qualities. I often jokingly call this job selecting "child model" fish. The selected fish will be raised until they meet the standards for sale," said Mr. Cuong.

Guppies are divided into different price ranges depending on the species, some cost only a few tens of thousands of dong but some cost several hundred thousand dong.

"A fish is considered beautiful based on many factors and how to play each species. For example, with Full Gold, players will carefully examine the fins and color. The more beautiful the gold color of the fish's body, the higher the price," Mr. Cuong explained.

The farm's guppies market is mainly aquarium shops in Da Nang and some individual customers who are fish hobbyists looking for quality "goods". Currently, the farm sells about 200 pairs of ornamental fish each month, mainly expensive types.

Besides, the three young men are also planning to establish a Guppy group in Da Nang to gather young people with the same passion, bringing the production and business of guppy ornamental fish to a new level.
