Three Vietnamese teams won medals at the Asia-Pacific Programming Contest.

Three Vietnamese teams won one silver and two bronze medals at the International Collegiate Programming Contest (ICPC) Asia- Pacific region.

The silver medal-winning team, named Sudo, is from the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, according to an announcement from the organizers of the ICPC Asia- Pacific International Collegiate Programming Contest on the evening of March 2nd.

The two Vietnamese teams that won bronze medals were HCMUS-ExploringWorld from the University of Science , Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City; and HUST Kite from Hanoi University of Technology.

These teams, along with 62 other teams from 40 prestigious universities in the Asia-Pacific region, solved 13 algorithmic problems within 5 hours, from 9 am to 2 pm on March 2nd, according to the global ICPC standard.

The championship title went to the NewTrend team from Seoul National University (South Korea). They solved 9 out of 13 problems. The three gold medal winners were from the University of Tokyo and Kyoto University (Japan), along with the National University of Singapore.

Sharing the silver medal with the Sudo team were the teams from Tokyo Institute of Technology (Japan), Soongsil University (South Korea), and the University of Indonesia (Indonesia).

Five teams won bronze medals, including two teams from Vietnam, along with National Taiwan University, Pohang University of Science and Technology (South Korea), and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).

These teams will represent the Asia-Pacific region at the 2024 ICPC Global Finals, which will take place in September in Kazakhstan. This is the world's oldest and most prestigious programming competition, with a history of over 50 years, often referred to as the "Olympic Games" for IT students.

This year's ICPC Asia-Pacific Regional Finals are being held in Vietnam for the first time, hosted by the University of Technology, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.

The exam is conducted entirely online using international standard systems, with the VNOJ online monitoring system operated by the Vietnam Olympic Club, and Professor Rie Shigetomi Yamaguchi (Japan) as Technical Director. The question setting committee and the judging panel consist of leading experts in the region. The chairman of the judging panel is Mr. Jonathan Irvin Gunawan (Indonesia).

Professor Nguyen Dinh Duc, Chairman of the University Council of the University of Technology, highly appreciated the dedication of the 65 participating teams.

"The greatest success is that through this competition, we discovered talent, attracted and encouraged students to explore their creativity and passion for information technology," Mr. Duc said.

Vietnam first participated in the ICPC in 2005. Since then, Vietnamese teams have consistently ranked among the top 100-140 finalists in the global ICPC competition. In 2002, the team from the University of Technology was the first Vietnamese representative to win a bronze medal, ranking 12th globally. This was also the first team from Southeast Asia to win a medal.
