According to a VNA correspondent in Eastern Europe, the Polish Cyber Defense Force (WOC) has just issued an urgent warning about a phishing campaign targeting WhatsApp users through compromised accounts of friends and relatives.
According to a notice posted on social networking site X on October 8, hackers are taking control of WhatsApp accounts and sending fake messages from friends or relatives (from compromised accounts), asking recipients to vote in a contest.
The messages lead victims to fake websites where they are tricked into entering their phone number and an 8-digit verification code, allowing the crooks to take full control of the victim's WhatsApp account.
This wave aims to steal login data, gain unauthorized access, and use compromised accounts to scam more victims.
WOC, a specialized unit of the Polish Armed Forces, described it as a “typical online scam campaign”, noting that the messages appeared credible because they were sent from known people.
Once an account is taken over, the attacker continues to spread phishing links and may attempt to blackmail the victim's network.
Authorities advise users not to click on suspicious links, not to provide personal information and not to share verification codes.
Instead, users should call the sender directly to confirm the authenticity of the message, report the incident to cybersecurity agencies, and check the “Linked Devices” settings on WhatsApp to ensure no unfamiliar devices are connected.
WOC also warns that similar scams could appear on other messaging platforms, including Messenger and Signal.
The agency stressed the need to be especially vigilant with sudden requests for help, voting or account verification, as waves of online scams continue to grow across many applications./.
