Most office buildings, shopping malls, hotels and medical facilities in urban areas are equipped with air conditioning systems. In addition to the positive effects, regular use of air conditioning also needs to be noted for its effects on health.
Doctor Pham Anh Ngan, University of Medicine and Pharmacy Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City - Branch 3, said that the human body has the ability to adapt to environmental temperature, through the process of thermoregulation. When moving suddenly from a hot outdoor environment to an air-conditioned room with a lower temperature, the autonomic nervous system will have to adjust continuously, easily causing reactions such as:
- Peripheral vasoconstriction, reduced blood circulation, cold hands and feet.
- Muscle shivering produces heat, loss of energy, fatigue, increased risk of cramps and muscle spasms.
- Increased risk of respiratory infections and mucosal irritation due to cold-dryness. Easily triggers symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, pharyngitis, bronchitis, etc.
- Causes homeostasis in people with chronic diseases. People with high blood pressure, coronary artery disease, asthma may experience symptoms when there is a sudden change in temperature.
There should be a period of time during the day when you turn off the air conditioner and open the door to let in fresh air.

According to traditional medicine, hot and humid climate makes the body susceptible to cold and damp evils, causing loss of body fluids. When in an air-conditioned room, the "cold air" from the air conditioner can also be considered cold evils in traditional medicine when causing illness, making the body susceptible to infection, causing loss of vital energy, easily causing diseases such as flu, headache, neck and shoulder pain due to cold evil invasion, etc. Having to balance between the cold environment and the natural environment outside is a pressure on the body, causing cold and heat to conflict, going against the natural health care methods.
Notes when using air conditioner
The use of air conditioners has become familiar in modern living environments. To avoid affecting health, we need to pay attention to some things when using air conditioners, as well as when working in cold rooms such as:
- Avoid entering a cold room when your body is sweating a lot.
- When going out in hot weather, stay in the buffer room for a few minutes to gradually adapt.
- Adjust the air conditioner temperature to no lower than 25-27°C. Do not set the air conditioner temperature below 25°C when the weather is too hot (higher than 35°C).
- Limit temperature difference (7°C) between outdoor and indoor environment.
- Replenish water and maintain room humidity.
Doctor Anh Ngan noted that for closed spaces, there should be a period of time during the day when the air conditioner should be turned off to let in natural air, and the air conditioner should be periodically cleaned to remove dust.
People who work in cold rooms continuously, depending on their physical condition, should limit eating cold foods and limit drinking ice.
In case you sit under an air conditioner with cold air directly hitting your neck and shoulder area, you should proactively wear a jacket or thin scarf to avoid the cold air directly causing muscle stiffness in the neck and shoulder area. You should pay attention to changing your posture after a certain period of work, self-massage and exercise to help the flow of Qi to avoid stagnation, especially in cold environments.
