Doctor Pham Tien Luc and his passion for contributing to the field of pathology

With nearly 20 years of experience in the profession, Dr. Pham Tien Luc, Specialist II - Head of the Department of Pathology (Provincial General Hospital) is still quietly, diligently, passionately and creatively working in the field of pathology - a quiet job with many unique elements of the medical industry.

Talking with Dr. Pham Tien Luc, what we felt about him was that he was a careful, calm, quiet and modest person when talking about himself. However, when asked about things related to pathology, he became excited and enthusiastic.

In 2003, after graduating as a General Practitioner from Thai Binh Medical University, Dr. Pham Tien Luc continued to study for 1 year in the General Medicine major at Hanoi University, then he decided to return to his hometown (Yen Mac - Yen Mo) to open a Traditional Medicine clinic.

Dr. Pham Tien Luc shared: I came to the Department of Pathology as a predestined relationship with the profession. That was in 2005, a senior working at the Provincial General Hospital introduced the Department of Pathology-Forensic Medicine. At the end of 2005, after being recruited to work at the Hospital (in 2005), I volunteered to work at the Department of Pathology-Forensic Medicine. At that time, many of my relatives asked me "why did you decide to become a doctor of silent pathology, while with my training, I could choose other more vibrant medical examination and treatment departments?". Their doubts were completely reasonable, because at that time, the understanding of this Department was almost very vague, many people simply thought that pathology was related to forensic medicine! Therefore, not many people accepted to work here, let alone volunteering.

Youth, passion and desire to conquer new knowledge about Pathology are the motivations for Dr. Luc to stick with the profession, together with his colleagues to affirm the role and importance of this specialty. "Pathology and Cytology play a particularly important role in screening, detecting precancerous lesions, early diagnosis of cancer diseases, helping to proactively prevent, detect and treat promptly and effectively. After many years of working in this field, I find this specialty more and more interesting, modern medicine has increasingly affirmed the important role and position of Pathology. This is considered the "gold" standard in screening, diagnosing and intensive treatment of diseases, especially malignant diseases such as cancer" - Dr. Luc shared.

Doctor Pham Tien Luc and his passion for contributing to the field of pathology — With 18 years of dedicated study, scientific research and work in the field of Pathology, Dr. Pham Tien Luc has had many topics and initiatives that have been widely applied and brought high efficiency.

In the current context, the number of people suffering from cancer tends to increase and the types of diseases are diverse, requiring pathologists to constantly learn and improve their skills to be able to make accurate diagnoses. To meet the increasing demand, since 2009, Dr. Luc has always strived to participate in specialized training courses and continuously researched more on pathology with the desire to contribute to improving the ability to diagnose and treat cancer patients, building prestige for the Department in particular and the Hospital in general.

In 2015, he boldly proposed to the Hospital leadership to direct the successful implementation of immunohistochemical staining techniques in the diagnosis and treatment of cancers. Up to now, this technique has become a routine application, contributing to reducing the number of patients transferred to higher levels. Not only that, with a passion for scientific research, in the past 10 years (2013 - 2023), Dr. Pham Tien Luc has successfully chaired the research of 7 scientific topics directly related to types of cancer, such as: breast, thyroid, lung, stomach... The topics ensure quality and have been recognized by all levels.

Typical among them is the topic "Application of immunohistochemical staining technique to identify 2 groups of breast carcinomas with positive and negative hormone receptors at Ninh Binh Provincial General Hospital". The project has helped 350 breast cancer patients to be treated, saving a total of over 7.3 billion VND. With this topic, Dr. Pham Tien Luc was honored to receive the First Prize of the 10th Ninh Binh Provincial Technical Innovation Competition (2020-2021) and won the A Prize - 3rd Hoa Lu Ninh Binh Provincial Science and Technology Award (2018-2023).

With his knowledge, experience and enthusiasm, Dr. Pham Tien Luc and his colleagues have gradually created breakthroughs for the Department of Pathology of the Provincial General Hospital, becoming an important link, contributing to the accurate diagnosis and effective treatment of diseases for the people.

Doctor Trinh Hung Son, Deputy Director of the Oncology Center (Provincial General Hospital) said: Since the topic "Application of immunohistochemical staining techniques to identify 2 groups of breast carcinomas with positive and negative hormone receptors" was applied at the Provincial General Hospital, it has contributed to shortening the diagnosis time and the waiting time for patients to be treated. Many breast cancer patients have been assured of treatment at the Hospital, without having to go to higher levels, contributing to reducing travel and treatment costs for patients, while reducing the overload situation for the Central Hospital, enhancing the reputation of the Hospital.

For nearly two decades in the profession, Dr. Pham Tien Luc has always pondered, thought, and devoted himself to the profession. According to him, diagnosis in pathological anatomy is considered the gold standard in the medical profession because of its high accuracy. Therefore, he has never allowed himself to work superficially. For him, knowledge is limitless and his understanding is limited. He always improves his knowledge, regularly reads and studies international and national scientific research documents to discover and apply new knowledge in pathological anatomy, and gradually conducts in-depth research to increasingly affirm the great value of the Department in clinical examination and treatment.

With many specialized techniques, the resonance of the machine system, the application of experience and talent, every year, the Department of Pathology of the Hospital has tested over 30,000 cases of cells and histopathology, giving accurate results, creating a solid basis for clinicians to develop timely and effective cancer treatment regimens.

Dr. Luc's outstanding efforts and passion for scientific research have strongly inspired his colleagues. Dr. Nguyen Thi Phuong Hao, Deputy Head of the Department of Pathology, Provincial General Hospital, shared: We always admire Dr. Pham Tien Luc's sense of responsibility, daring to think and dare to do. He is always dedicated, guiding and helping his colleagues to progress together. Dr. Luc's passion and dedication have also promoted the spirit of creative work and enthusiasm in each officer, technician and employee of the Department to contribute to raising the position of the pathology specialty, responding to the trust of clinicians and patients, affirming the role and position of the Department in medical examination and treatment activities.

With nearly two decades of working in the profession, Dr. Pham Tien Luc has always left a deep impression on his colleagues and patients with his responsible, dedicated and creative working spirit. For many years, he has been recognized as a grassroots Emulation Fighter, a Provincial Emulation Fighter (2022), received a Certificate of Merit from the Provincial People's Committee and was awarded a Certificate of Creative Labor by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labor. This is also the motivation for him to continue to stick with and contribute to the quiet work he has chosen, and always devote himself to the patients.
