Behind every drop of sweat of doctors and nurses in that "stormy sea and island area", there is the life and health of those who firmly stick to the sea, protect the fishing grounds, and contribute to protecting the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the Fatherland.

Until now, many days after Ship 265 of Naval Region 2 brought working delegation No. 2 to visit, wish a happy New Year and give gifts to officers and soldiers at DK1/10 Platform and Radar Station 590 Con Dao, Captain, Doctor Nguyen Xuan Trung, Chief of Infirmary of Brigade 171, still cannot forget the incident of rescuing a fisherman who had an accident when the ship's belt crushed his finger.
“Even though it was just a work accident, in the middle of the ocean, if not treated promptly, the wound could become infected, with unpredictable consequences,” Dr. Trung shared.
The story of rescuing a fisherman from a squid fishing boat in An Giang who had his left index finger severed while fishing in the waters of DK1/10 Platform (Ca Mau Shoal) was told by Dr. Trung: After completing the delivery of Tet gifts to the officers and soldiers of the three platforms of Tu Chinh Cluster and the soldiers of Con Dao Radar Station 590, Ship 265 of Naval Region 2 continued its journey to DK1/10 Platform. When the ship was about 6 nautical miles away, an urgent distress signal from fishing boat AG 0267-TS was heard via I-Com: “Is there any ship nearby? Help us! We are in trouble, please help!”
Immediately, the captain of Ship 265 contacted fishing boat AG 0267-TS and requested emergency maneuvers to the DK1/10 Platform area, ready to receive patients on the boat when the navy ship arrived.
The captain’s command “Emergency acceleration, proceed 3!” made Ship 265 rush against the wind through the big waves, approaching the fishing boat. The patient was transferred to a boat and quickly taken to the Platform for emergency treatment.
After cleaning the wound, Dr. Trung and nurse Nguyen Viet A performed surgery, amputating the severed finger, ligation of the blood vessels, suturing the stump and administering IV fluids.
“At that time, the patient had a high fever, pale face, weak consciousness, and poor communication. The wound showed signs of infection and necrosis scattered around the area due to being left for more than 24 hours. If not treated promptly, the condition would worsen, with more serious necrosis and infection,” Dr. Trung shared.
He also said, “I have worked for many years at DK1 Platform, treating many fishermen. I understand their psychology when they have work accidents in the middle of the ocean. They usually try to endure until their condition becomes serious before sending out a distress signal. Every time we receive fishermen who have an accident or suddenly become ill while working, whether it is dark, rainy, windy, with big waves or strong winds, we are always ready to treat them. Because in the middle of the ocean, if we don’t save them, who will? As doctors, we cannot ignore the pain of patients, that is a professional principle. Saving fishermen is not only a duty but also a matter of humanity.”

The love between the army and the people is hard to describe in words.
At the forefront of the Truong Sa archipelago, doctors at 21 islands, island points and 33 military bases are called “Mothers of Fishermen”. To those wearing white coats in this sea area, fishermen are not only acquaintances but also family members.
Even though he had spent sleepless nights saving people, every time he mentioned it, Captain Pham Minh Duc, Commander of Da Lat Island, still could not hold back his emotions.
He said: “In the middle of the night, with strong winds and waves, we knew it would be difficult, but we did not hesitate. When I received the distress call, I ordered the emergency boat to be lowered and maneuvered to the drifting fishing boat and the five fishermen who were calling for help. The boat died, the bottom was punctured by coral, water flooded into the compartment, making them helpless.
panicked. When we arrived, Mr. Tran Van May, the boat owner, burst into tears: “Save us. If it weren’t for you, we would have definitely sunk in the sea,” then he hugged me. After the five fishermen got on the boat, we took them to the island.
After waiting for nearly a week for the ship to take them back to the mainland, the five people were very emotional and kept thanking each other. Soldiers and fishermen ate together and grew crops together on the island, very warm and close. That is the story of us rescuing five fishermen on the KH 96658-TS ship of Hoai Nhon district, Binh Dinh, when the ship broke down and drifted at sea," Captain Duc shared.
Going back in time, on June 21, 2023, doctors on Truong Sa Lon Island received fisherman Le Van Lai in a state of fainting, paleness, and blood loss due to gastrointestinal bleeding, acute gastric and duodenal bleeding. Immediately, emergency treatment was urgently deployed.
Due to the lack of blood to transfuse to patients, that very night, officers and soldiers of Truong Sa Lon island were mobilized to donate blood. More than 30 healthy soldiers from the battalions were sent to the island’s infirmary. Under the neon lights, amidst the echoing sound of the waves, volunteer arms reached out to donate blood to save lives.
The head of the infirmary on Truong Sa Lon island, Captain Truong Duc Cuong, was drenched in sweat as he encouraged the patient to endure the pain while performing the blood transfusion procedure.
After a sleepless night, although everyone was tired, everyone was still happy because fisherman Le Van Lai was saved. Afterwards, Mr. Lai was transferred to the mainland on Ship 960 of Brigade 125, Naval Region 2, and taken to Military Hospital 175 of the Ministry of National Defense for further treatment.
It is impossible to tell all the silent sacrifices of the medical team in Truong Sa, DK1 - the doctors who are dedicating their youth and strength day and night for the lives of soldiers and fishermen.
For them, each successful emergency is a double joy. After the salty sweat in the middle of the ocean, there is a bright smile imbued with the love between the army and the people in the countless storms of the ocean.
