Colleagues' companionship
In the early days of my career, I carried with me the enthusiasm of youth and a heart that always ached for the disadvantaged. When the name Thien Ngoc Minh Uy began to spread throughout the villages with sophisticated scams targeting simple farmers, I knew I could not stand aside.
Head of Department Trinh Thanh Cong not only assigned me the responsibility of writing this topic but also meticulously suggested, carefully instructed and guided me step by step to complete the work. Immediately after that, I received support from my colleagues. Ms. Doan Thu, with her extensive experience as a reporter, connected me with important witnesses - the lives that were shattered by Thien Ngoc Minh Uy.
Reporter Hoang Niem works at Na Hang- Lam Binh Ecological Lake.
In particular, reporter Minh Hoang and I went undercover, playing the role of people eager to change their lives to penetrate deeply into the fraud network. Hoang pretended to be a new graduate, eager to earn money to support his life, listening to every sweet word with me, taking photos and videos to collect evidence. I myself also constantly searched for information, directly participated in consultation sessions, recorded every moment, every empty promise of theirs.
The consensus did not stop there. Reporters Quang Hoa, Ly Thinh, Thu Huong, Quoc Viet… also did not hesitate to join in finding more opinions from readers and witnesses, contributing to making the information we collected more solid and convincing than ever.
I understand better than anyone the role and meaning of this article. With caution and meticulousness, I went to the villages myself, listening to each heartbreaking story from the victims. The bewildered eyes of farmers who had just sold all their assets, the tears of resentment from the elderly because their children were caught up in the multi-level vortex... Sadly, there were people who did not even know they were being deceived, but were still full of enthusiasm to convince us to participate. All of this urged me to write, to speak the truth. The article "Multi-level marketing transformation" was born, clearly showing the wrongdoings of the company, the fraudulent "tricks", the voices of the victims and the role and responsibility of the authorities.
When the article was published, that night, my phone started ringing continuously, with calls from unknown numbers, threatening messages with vulgar language. "You better watch out!", "Don't touch other people's rice bowls!", "Be careful with your life!". Anxiety began to creep in, gnawing at my mind. Not stopping at words, these people started to act. Some even came to my house, waiting for my family to be away to "deal with" the chickens, destroying property in order to threaten me. They wanted to send a clear message: They knew where I was, and they could do anything.
The climax was on the afternoon of the 28th of Tet that year. When everyone was busy preparing to welcome spring, my house was visited by strangers. I was frozen in my house, surrounded by extreme fear. These were no longer threats on the phone, this was real danger, knocking on my door. Sitting at home, holding my 2-year-old son in my arms. And so the anxiety crept in, gnawing at my mind. A feeling of regret flashed through my mind: "Why did I write this article to put my family in such a difficult situation?".
Inspirational People
Fear and anxiety haunted my mind day by day. Even seeing a strange phone call or any crowd gathered at the alley made my heart skip a beat. I reported the whole incident to the Editorial Board and the department head.
Editor-in-Chief Phung Thi Lan and Deputy Editor-in-Chief Ngo Thi Thu Ha, Head of Department Trinh Thanh Cong not only listened with understanding, but also reassured me with firm, steadfast words: "Don't be afraid! That's what journalism is all about! You have to dare to fight for the truth!", "You did the right thing, the whole agency will protect you!", "Calm down, we will solve it together". The Editorial Board and the department leaders did not stop at empty words of encouragement. With their subtlety and understanding, they also skillfully told funny stories, made witty jokes, helped ease the tension, making me feel much more relieved and confident. This sincere concern dispelled some of the fear in my mind, lighting up the flame of hope.
In particular, I received support from the leadership of the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda Department (now the Provincial Party Committee's Propaganda and Mass Mobilization Department), directly from comrade Mai Duc Thong, Deputy Head of the Standing Propaganda Department, who grasped the situation and promptly encouraged and strengthened my strong belief.
Those words were like a precious sedative, helping me calm down. I saw the determination in everyone's eyes, felt the warmth of their colleagues more than ever - a feeling that has become a solid support for me. All of them have inspired me with a fire of enthusiasm, reminding me of the noble mission of the profession.
Grown from storms
From a timid, fearful reporter, I gradually became stronger. I learned to face threats head-on, no longer trembling when strange phone calls rang. Instead of avoiding, I firmly answered, talking frankly with threatening tones. Finally, everything gradually calmed down. The article about Thien Ngoc Minh Uy after a period of publication was effective. People who had made mistakes in that network gradually realized the true face of fraud. Along with the fierce struggle from the authorities, the strong voice of the press nationwide and the consensus of the people, the Thien Ngoc Minh Uy multi-level company system was finally closed nationwide.
The article about Thien Ngoc Minh Uy is not only a professional memory, but also an important milestone in my life. It taught me a valuable lesson about resilience, about warm camaraderie and about the great responsibility of a true journalist. Until now, every time I look back at that time, I still feel extremely proud that I did not back down. Above all, I am deeply grateful for working and contributing at Tuyen Quang Newspaper. This is not just an agency, but a family, where everyone always accompanies and stands side by side. I am fortunate to work under the guidance of dedicated leaders who always care and create conditions for me to develop.
It is in the Tuyen Quang Newspaper environment that I have gradually grown stronger in my life and in my writing career. I am grateful to journalism for giving me the opportunity to experience and train myself to become more mature and confident.
