On the morning of November 12, at the ceremony to celebrate the 70th anniversary of the establishment of the Capital's Education and Training sector and the 42nd anniversary of Vietnam Teachers' Day, Minister of Education and Training Nguyen Kim Son gave a speech reviewing the tradition, achievements, challenges, opportunities and expectations for the capital's education.

Minister Nguyen Kim Son said: "Since 1954, Hanoi Capital has entered a new glorious historical period, Hanoi Department of Education and Training was established as part of the apparatus of the Military Commission. And from that day, the new education system was established and continuously grew along with the general fields of Hanoi Capital".

The Minister emphasized: "The Capital Education and Training Sector has always been one of the pioneering units, leading in all tasks of the whole sector. In particular, since 2008, Hanoi has expanded its boundaries. Although facing many challenges in the administrative adjustment process, the quality of education continues to be maintained and improved, and discipline is strengthened.

Currently, the scale of education in Hanoi accounts for over 10% of the national education scale with nearly 3,000 educational institutions at all levels, about 130,000 teachers, and nearly 2.3 million students. Hanoi is also home to 120 universities and colleges with nearly 1 million students. The quality of comprehensive education and mass education is constantly being improved, and key education is always at the top of the country with nearly 2,500 awards at national excellent student competitions and medals at international competitions.

The education of the capital city is facing high demands, high requirements, high standards, in exemplary, pioneering, top quality and is an example, a model for education of the whole country. Therefore, what the education of the capital city has achieved and been recognized in the past time needs to be calculated with multiplication and added value in all recognition and evaluation".

Challenges of the capital's education sector

According to Minister Nguyen Kim Son, the Capital's education sector, as a pillar of the national education sector, is also facing common challenges and opportunities for the entire education sector. One of the major challenges is the need to continue to innovate and improve quality, meeting the human resource needs for a new development stage. Along with that is the challenge of successfully implementing fundamental and comprehensive educational innovation at all levels, which we are currently focusing more on at the general education level with the implementation of the 2018 General Education Program in conditions of many difficulties in terms of resources, teachers, facilities, equipment and mechanisms.

In addition, the Capital's Education sector also faces specific challenges such as: Students are concentrated, unevenly distributed and fluctuate, leading to difficulties in dividing routes, meeting the great learning needs and the shortage of local public schools in some areas; the gap in quality and educational conditions between inner-city district schools and suburban district schools is still quite large; the lack of space, the planning of school and classroom networks in some inner-city districts, places with many industrial parks, new urban areas... still has many difficulties and challenges. We hope that the Education sector will continue to advise the City's leaders to continue to remove difficulties, overcome challenges to continue sustainable development".

The Minister expects: "Current education emphasizes the development of the whole person as the focus and goal. In the comprehensive development of people, the education of the capital needs to aim higher than the general requirements of the whole country, aiming to educate and create elegant citizens of the capital, with cultural vision, social responsibility and knowing how to live happily for themselves and for the community. These are citizens with high cultural qualities, with skills in science and technology, civilized and elegant citizens of the digital age, good at expertise, good at foreign languages.

To do so, the education system of the capital must aim for an elegant education. In which schools are elegant schools, teachers and students are elegant. There, schools must be places where students are guaranteed safety, no school violence, no swearing, no forced extra classes. There, social evils are avoided and there, there exists a typical cultural school environment. Most importantly, there, people treat each other with love and responsibility."

For the teachers of the Capital, I congratulate the teachers who are working in the education system with all the honor and pride. Being a teacher is a noble and honorable job, the teachers of the Capital are even more honored and proud. In addition to the qualities, abilities and skills of teachers in general to create an elegant education system of the Capital, we ourselves need to be exemplary, need to be elegant in an exemplary way. That is a very high thing but also an expectation, a trust of the industry and of the Capital. I hope we have tried even harder to meet that great expectation", the Minister told the teachers.
