Tourists excitedly wear Ao Dai to experience Hue culture |
Strange land turns love
Returning to Hue on a sunny day in May, Ms. Nguyen Thi My Nu (30 years old, from Binh Dinh) no longer set the goal of coming to Hue just to take photos to check in. This time, her return trip cherished a desire to explore Hue from unique perspectives, bearing the mark of identity.
Stepping onto the double-decker bus to see Hue at night, My Nu still felt strange about the Hue singing program on the bus. Many questions arose, such as: "Is Hue singing really easy to listen to? Is it for young people? How is the traditional music of Hue combined in such a strange space?"... And then, the female tourist herself was also attracted without realizing it in an encounter between literati and musical culture.
The bus takes artists and performers of Hue folk songs along with tourists through very Hue-like places: Phu Van Lau, Dong Ba market, and Truong Tien bridge... The streets are not as modern and bustling at night as big cities in the world, but through the eyes of tourists, listening to Hue folk songs on the bus stirs up indescribable emotions in their hearts. Occasionally, the organizers "insert" a few songs about Hue to change the emotions. In that moment, in that space, My Nu and many tourists enjoy: Hue folk songs seem not to be the taste of young people, but easily enter the hearts of listeners, like the way the ancient capital used to be a strange land, but now becomes a beloved land.
Ms. Duong Thi Cong Ly, Director of Vietnam Sightseeing Joint Stock Company, Hue branch, shared: “Normally, people think that traditional music must be performed in a traditional space, with traditional people and costumes. The innovation of bringing Hue singing on a bus, performing while moving, has difficulties, affecting the sound quality, so at first there were concerns. But then, the guests put their love on this bus as a way to motivate us to try harder. Guests who come to Hue for the first time also encourage us to continue, they will come back to experience it.”
To let Hue's unique features attract tourists
Every year, Hue tourism attracts millions of domestic and foreign visitors to visit and experience. Many compliments are given to the landscape, culture, and people of the ancient capital, but many visitors who love Hue also express their desire to have more unique features of Hue tourism, as a way to increase Hue's identity in tourism products.
Mr. Thai Nhat Minh, a tourist from Hanoi, shared: “Hue is a wonderful destination, there is no need to discuss it. However, when coming to Hue, tourists usually only visit historical sites, pagodas, and simply experience some traditional crafts… Tours that deeply explore the cultural identity of Hue seem to be few. If only, tourists could experience a day as a Hue person - past and present, with royal or folk experiences that are truly Hue-style.”
I still remember the Lunar New Year, when following a group of tourists to experience Hue Tet, although they came from Europe, the journey to "penetrate" the lives of Hue people made them excited. The travel agency did not build a program in the form of a performance, but together with the locals, brought them to experiences, from going to the Tet market, arranging flowers for Tet, wrapping banh tet, cooking and gathering around family meals. There, they were introduced to how to maintain family traditions in a four-generation family (a family with four generations living under one roof). Unfortunately, these experiences with cultural identity have not been built into regular tours but are only available on Tet tours.
According to the representative of Hue City Tourism Association, in fact, the cultural values and cultural identity of Hue have been and are being exploited in tourism products, from cuisine, from experiences in clothing, from health care tourism with Dai Nam Thai Y Vien, or in garden house architecture, music (especially Hue Royal Court Music)... however, there is still a need for more in-depth experiences to promote the value of identity, create unique features, typical products, and make tourists remember.
The orientation of developing tourism products with strong Hue identity has been set by Hue and will be implemented. Director of the Department of Tourism Tran Thi Hoai Tram said that Hue is focusing on repositioning its product set to suit the market and new trends to ensure the brand of Hue tourism. In particular, it is focusing on building and effectively exploiting products and services revolving around typical brands such as "Hue - Capital of Cuisine", "Hue - Capital of Ao Dai", "Hue - City of Festivals". Developing tourism products with strong Hue identity is a direction that the tourism industry and businesses are always interested in. In the coming time, when there are more such products, it is believed that Hue will be more attractive and attract more and more tourists.
