Bac Kan Newspaper transforms in the digital era

BBK - As a local Party newspaper with modest conditions, Bac Kan Newspaper has strived to overcome difficulties, proactively approached new trends, determined to innovate in both journalistic thinking, working technology and reader approach in the digital age... writing a story of adaptation, creativity and constant transformation.

Since 2005, Bac Kan Newspaper has built and operated an electronic newspaper page - becoming one of the first local Party newspapers in the country to have an electronic version. This is a pioneering step, demonstrating a sharp mind and daring to anticipate trends. From that early foundation, the application of technology in the production and publishing of printed and electronic newspapers has always been of interest to the Editorial Board to improve step by step.

However, the real turning point in the digital transformation process of Bac Kan Newspaper must be from 2023 - the time when the concept of "digital transformation of journalism" is no longer a trend, but becomes a key political task. Implementing the Strategy for digital transformation of journalism to 2025, with a vision to 2030 of the Government and the Overall Project for digital transformation of Bac Kan province in the period of 2022 - 2025, with a vision to 2030 of the Provincial People's Committee, the Party Cell of Bac Kan Newspaper issued a specialized resolution on digital transformation. In which, the Editorial Board identified clear goals: Increasing the rate of multimedia news articles, promoting multi-platform publishing.

The team of editors and reporters were sent to attend many intensive training courses organized by the Vietnam Journalists Association and the Provincial Journalists Association. Since then, digital working capacity has been significantly improved, gradually forming a modern journalism mindset throughout the unit.

One of the most obvious changes is the diversification of press products. Not only traditional news and articles, the team of reporters of Bac Kan Newspaper is now proficient in many modern genres such as infographics, videos, podcasts, event livestreams, e-magazines, long-form... Livestream news of major activities and events of the province such as: Bac Kan Cultural Tourism Week, Autumn Colors of Ba Be Lake, Opening of Ba Be Spring Festival, Travel through Viet Bac Heritage Sites... Or the rescue work of people and vehicles falling into a sinkhole in Kim Lu (Na Ri) all attracted tens of thousands to hundreds of thousands of views, thousands of comments and shares on social networks.

In 2023 alone, Bac Kan Electronic Newspaper published 4,481 news articles, including 466 multimedia news articles (accounting for 10.3%); total access 4,116,221 times, an average of 11,277 times/day. By 2024, Bac Kan Electronic Newspaper published 6,702 news articles, including 1,168 multimedia works (accounting for 17.4%); total access 5,888,675 times, an average of 16,133 times/day. In the first 5 months of 2025, the Newspaper published 2,396 news articles, including 347 multimedia news articles (accounting for 14.4%); total access 3,721,599 times, an average of 24,088 times/day. The Bac Kan Newspaper Fanpage has reached nearly 10,000 likes and more than 30,000 followers, and has been given a blue tick by Facebook, affirming its reputation and spread on social networking platforms.

In addition, Bac Kan Newspaper has invested in upgrading the technology infrastructure system to operate the editorial office more effectively and modernly. The CMS system has been improved in both interface and function, allowing the integration of the publishing process of printed and electronic newspapers on the same platform. Many new modules have been integrated, notably the application of artificial intelligence (AI) to suggest SEO-standard keywords, check spelling errors, convert text to speech, manage reader feedback, manage authors, and royalties. The Electronic Editorial Office (Digital Editorial Office) system supports the creation and rendering of publishing plans for printed and electronic newspapers; rendering reports, and managing agency administration with modern features, actively serving the work of leadership, management, production, and operations...

Bac Kan Newspaper has proactively overcome difficulties, actively socialized, sought professional support from other units and continuously learned to improve the journalism process to suit local realities. Difficulties such as traditional journalism habits, lack of digital human resources, and the requirement to produce multimedia content that takes a lot of time and effort are gradually being resolved by the spirit of innovation and determination to overcome of the entire team. With substantial and clear changes in the digital era, in 2024, Bac Kan Newspaper was ranked by the Ministry of Information and Communications as Fair nationwide in digital transformation - an encouraging result in the context of many challenges.

The 100th anniversary of Vietnam Revolutionary Press Day is an opportunity for the Bac Kan press team to look back on the past with pride, recognition and strong determination to innovate. In the coming period, along with the merger of Bac Kan - Thai Nguyen provinces, Bac Kan press staff will continue to unite, closely coordinate with new colleagues, closely follow the Party's direction, effectively implement the Government's Digital Transformation Strategy to 2025, with a vision to 2030; improve content quality, innovate approaches to readers and continue to build a modern press agency with rich identity in the national media flow./.
