BHG - Over the past century, our country's revolutionary press has fulfilled the mission entrusted to it by the Party, State and People. Entering a new stage of development, the press has innovated and transformed strongly, continuing to affirm its important role on the cultural and ideological front of the Party.

Statistics from the authorities show that by the end of 2024, the country had 884 press agencies, including 812 newspapers, magazines and 72 radio and television stations; about 41,000 people working in the press field, about 21,000 journalists were issued cards. That affirms that after 100 years of construction and development, our country's revolutionary press has made strong progress in terms of quantity, quality, programs, publication content, and initial mastery of technology. In the flow of innovation and creativity, many traditional press agencies have developed into multimedia press, the team of journalists is increasingly strong, steadfast in political will, good at professional skills, exemplary in ethics and performing well in social responsibilities.

However, with the rapid development of information technology, social networks, artificial intelligence, big data... the press is facing many challenges, especially the issue of press economics . How to both perform the propaganda function well and maintain and ensure revenue for the agency, increasing income for journalists is really a big challenge for press agencies. A statistic from the authorities also shows that, as of the end of last year, with print and electronic newspapers, 39% of agencies self-guaranteed regular expenditures and investment expenditures or self-guaranteed regular expenditures; 36% of agencies self-guaranteed part of regular expenditures and 25% were guaranteed regular expenditures by the budget. With the type of PTTH, only 2.77% of agencies self-guaranteed regular expenditures and investment expenditures; 27.77% self-guaranteed regular expenditures; 58.33% self-finance part of regular expenditure and about 9.72% have regular expenditure financed by the budget.

In 2024, print and electronic newspapers will have revenue of about VND 8,080 billion, down 6.1% compared to 2023, of which advertising will decrease by 5.6%. Total revenue of radio and television stations will reach about VND 9,140 billion (down nearly VND 2,800 billion compared to the previous year). Most stations are unable to fully exploit the advertising time/day/channel as prescribed by the Advertising Law.

The decline in revenue of traditional press agencies and fierce competition from social networks have urged press agencies to constantly innovate to keep up with new trends. From the urgent need for innovation, the Prime Minister has approved the Strategy for Digital Transformation of Press to 2025, with a vision to 2030. The goal set for 2030 is that 100% of press agencies will put content on digital platforms; 90% of press agencies will use centralized data analysis and processing platforms, applying artificial intelligence to optimize operations; 100% of press agencies will operate a converged newsroom model and models suitable for the development of science and technology, producing content according to digital press trends.

The above policy has been welcomed and implemented vigorously by press agencies and journalists, considering it a vital factor in the new era. Therefore, in 2024, 351 press agencies participated in and completed the training program, guiding the assessment and measurement of the level of digital transformation maturity. There were 282 units assessing and measuring the level of digital transformation, including: 40 units in the Central Newspaper Group; 62 units in the Local Newspaper Group; 48 units in the Central and Local Magazine Group; 65 units in the Radio and Television Station Group... The results showed that 28 press agencies achieved the Excellent level (an increase of 6.27% compared to 2023); 65 units achieved the Good level (an increase of 14.99% compared to 2023); 55 units achieved the Fair level (an increase of 6.31% compared to 2023); 25 units achieved Average level (down 3.22% compared to 2023) and 109 units achieved Weak level (down 24.35% compared to 2023).

According to Journalist Nguyen Duc Loi, Permanent Vice President of the Vietnam Journalists Association: Currently, many press agencies have built converged newsrooms - where artificial intelligence becomes a powerful assistant in all stages of press production. The artificial intelligence system automatically suggests topics, suggests trending keywords, automatically summarizes text, converts text to speech, creates images, creates content or artificial intelligence virtual assistants quickly synthesize data. Meanwhile, Chatbots support editors in retrieving documents, responding to readers; analyzing user trends, optimizing content according to access behavior... Artificial intelligence does not replace, but supports journalists to work faster, more accurately, more deeply and closer to readers. “In addition to applying technology, we also need to pay attention to professional ethics in the digital age. Technology is a tool, but it is humans who decide how to operate, control and orient artificial intelligence to serve the interests of society and the community,” emphasized journalist Nguyen Duc Loi.

In line with the development of the times, implementing the revolution of streamlining the apparatus, press agencies have been merging and streamlining internally to make the apparatus more compact, operate more effectively and efficiently, and take on the role of propaganda, responding to and promoting new factors, advanced models and the constant movement of the country... That shows that revolutionary press is always proactive in adapting, always maintaining its role, mission and the trust of the Party, State and People.
