BHG - "This year's Tam Hoa plums are bearing more fruit than in previous years, with beautiful appearance, larger and tastier fruits..." That's the assessment of a plum orchard owner in Coc Pai town (Xin Man district). At this time, plum orchards throughout Xin Man district are bustling with activity during the harvest season.
In late May, as the first summer rains begin to refresh the "Melodies of the Western Region," farmers in Xin Man district enter the harvest season for Tam Hoa plums. Plum orchards stretch across the mountain slopes, each plum displaying its deep red color beneath the lush green foliage, carrying within it the sweetness of nature. Nan Ma commune has the largest area of Tam Hoa plum cultivation in the district, with nearly 14 hectares including Hau plum, Tam Hoa plum, and Blood plum varieties. Of these, Tam Hoa plums ripen earlier than Blood plums, usually in late May and early June. This year, the plum harvest is bountiful, with abundant, crisp, and large fruits, bringing joy to the farmers.

Early in the morning, the people of Xin Man are busy harvesting plums to bring to the central market in Coc Pai town to sell. The Coc Pai market is not only a trading hub but also a cultural meeting point for the Mong, Dao, Tay, and Nung ethnic groups. Here, Tam Hoa plums are sold for 15-20 thousand dong/kg, attracting many buyers from neighboring areas. Previously, plum trees were mainly grown for family consumption. Since recognizing the economic value of this crop, many localities in Xin Man have implemented plans to maintain and develop plum cultivation in the area, including a program to renovate unproductive orchards. The planting and care of plum trees are well-suited to the local climate and soil conditions, providing a stable income for the people.
Ms. Vuong Thi Sinh, a resident of Coc Pai town, shared: "My garden has more than 50 Tam Hoa plum trees. This year, the weather has been favorable, the plums are bearing abundant fruit, and there are few pests and diseases, so the fruit is beautiful and large. Since the beginning of the season, my family has sold more than 500 kg of plums. On average, each tree yields 50 to 70 kg, and some large trees can yield more than 100 kg. At the beginning of the season, plums sold for 25-30 thousand VND/kg, but currently the market price is 15-20 thousand VND/kg. Besides selling at the local market, my family also transports them to other provinces when customers place orders."

Besides being an economically valuable crop, Tam Hoa plums also contribute to the development of local tourism. During the plum season, many tourists flock to Xin Man to experience plum picking, enjoy local cuisine , and learn about the culture of the ethnic groups. Coc Pai market also becomes an attractive destination for tourists, where they can shop for local specialties and immerse themselves in the bustling atmosphere of the highland market. From early morning, many people arrive at the market on motorbikes loaded with baskets of plums. Plums are displayed in various shops, spread out on tarpaulins, or placed in baskets, reflecting the unique culture of the local people. The lively calls and bargaining create a bustling atmosphere characteristic of the highlands during the harvest season.
At the local market, tourists have many choices of crisp, delicious plums, but perhaps the best part is the experience of picking and enjoying plums right in the orchard. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lan, a tourist from Da Nang , shared: "This is my first time visiting Xin Man during plum season. The feeling of picking ripe plums with my own hands, tasting their crispness, the sweet and slightly sour flavor amidst the tranquil mountains and forests is truly memorable. The plums here are much better than those I've eaten elsewhere."
The Tam Hoa plum season not only brings significant income to the people but also contributes to preserving and promoting the cultural values of the ethnic groups in Xin Man. With its potential for tourism and agricultural development, Xin Man promises to become an attractive destination in the journey of exploring and experiencing the cultural beauty of the regions of Ha Giang province.
