Parts of Germany have been hit by thunderstorms and large hail as the Lambert low-pressure system sweeps across the country.

The storm caused damage to several buildings, including blowing off roofs, in Henau, Germany.

Severe storms brought heavy rain and damaging winds to several German states on June 22 (local time). The German Weather Service (DWD) issued warnings of tornadoes, thunderstorms and extreme hail after weeks of warm weather.

The movement of a low-pressure trough and the presence of hot, muggy subtropical air will cause atypical weather patterns in the country, the German Weather Service said.

The transport authority in the city of Kassel, in the central state of Hessen, said bus and rail routes had been disrupted by the storm and it was unclear when services would return to normal.

According to the German Federal Railways, long-distance trains connecting Frankfurt and Hannover, Berlin and Hamburg have been suspended. Train cars in some cities have been made available for stranded passengers to stay overnight.

Also in Hesse, several roofs were blown off in the town of Waldeck am Edersee, according to a police spokesman. In the north of the state, there were reports of trees falling on parked cars, flooded basements and damage to buildings due to hail.

Large hailstones fell on the city of Kassel in central Germany.

Emergency services in the western city of Neuwied, in the state of Rhineland-Palatinate, told Germany's DPA news agency that people were rescued from their cars after rainwater flooded a tunnel on the evening of June 22.

In the western parts of North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate, heavy rains are forecast to move north and east towards Lower Saxony, Hamburg and Saxony-Anhalt.

Meanwhile, more localized storms are expected in southwestern Germany, with hailstones around 5 cm (2 inches) in diameter and violent wind gusts of up to 100 km/h (60 mph).

The German Weather Service says there is a high risk of tornadoes in central parts of the country.

Although tornadoes in Germany are generally not as destructive or frequent as in some other parts of the world , such as the United States, they can still cause damage to structures, vehicles, and vegetation.
