DTO - After a long journey of efforts to "Bring the Cranes Back" by the community in general and Dong Thap province in particular, especially friends from the Kingdom of Thailand, last weekend, at Tram Chim National Park, Tam Nong district, Dong Thap Provincial People's Committee solemnly organized the program to receive the first 6 red-crowned cranes from Thailand to Vietnam. The event is not only an important milestone in the conservation of cranes, but also a vivid symbol of international friendship, the spirit of joining hands to protect nature without borders, regardless of skin color or ethnicity...

Farmers in the buffer zone of Tram Chim National Park strive to change production practices, moving towards ecological rice production to reduce negative impacts on the environment.

The birds return - awakening memories and hopes

In the memories of many Dong Thap Muoi people, the image of the elegant Red-crowned Crane has been deeply imprinted in their hearts, associated with the peaceful scenery of the land. The graceful dances among the vast green grass are like a harmonious melody between humans and nature. However, over time, that figure gradually disappeared, the last time the Crane returned to Tram Chim National Park was in 2021, leaving behind many worries in the hearts of those who are deeply attached to the landscape of their homeland.

After a long time of persistently restoring habitats, improving living environments and building a dedicated conservation project, Dong Thap has joyfully welcomed the first cranes back to their old home - Tram Chim National Park. Mr. Nguyen Van Man, residing in Phu Xuan hamlet, Phu Duc commune, Tam Nong district, is one of 15 members of the Red-crowned Crane and wild bird protection propaganda team at Tram Chim National Park and is also one of the first farmers of Phu Duc commune to participate in the environmentally friendly rice production model, producing rice in an organic direction in the buffer zone of the National Park from the very beginning. He was very emotional when he saw his "Red-crowned Crane friends", who had been absent for many years, now returning to Tram Chim National Park. “I feel proud but also feel more responsible. Because in order to help expand the natural living space for Red-crowned Cranes, it is not enough for just a few farmers like me to change their rice production habits, but it requires more participation from the community. Therefore, in the near future, I am determined to continue to mobilize and propagate farmers to change their production habits with the sectors and levels. I really hope that with our changes, Red-crowned Cranes will expand their living space as expected,” Mr. Nguyen Van Man shared.

In deep emotion, at the ceremony of receiving 6 Red-crowned Cranes, Mr. Le Minh Hoan - Vice Chairman of the National Assembly , shared: "The event of receiving 6 Red-crowned Cranes from Thailand is not only the event of receiving a rare bird species, but also a noble act, demonstrating the philosophy of harmonious development between humans and nature. Because nature can exist without humans, but human life is always attached to and dependent on nature".

Vice Chairman of the National Assembly Le Minh Hoan said: “Happiness does not come from big things, but starts from small actions. If we want to change the future, we must change our thinking today - like the way Tram Chim farmers are changing every day.”

Nature Conservation - Creating Green Growth for the Future

The reception of 6 Sarus Cranes from the Kingdom of Thailand to Tram Chim National Park is not only a symbolic event of international cooperation, but also an important step in the sustainable development orientation of Dong Thap province. This is the “sweet fruit” of a long and persistent journey to preserve natural heritage, revive wetland ecosystems and create new development values for the future.

According to comrade Le Quoc Phong - Member of the Party Central Committee, Secretary of Dong Thap Provincial Party Committee, the Red-crowned Crane Conservation Project is a key part of the province's green development strategy. Comrade Le Quoc Phong affirmed: "The successful reception of 6 cranes from Thailand is the result of consensus among the government, businesses, international organizations and especially local people. It proves that when the community joins hands, nature will revive".

Not only stopping at preserving a rare bird species, Dong Thap is gradually shaping the foundation for sustainable agricultural development associated with environmental protection. In the buffer zone of Tram Chim National Park, the "Crane Rice Field" model in the communes of Tan Cong Sinh and Phu Duc is showing clear effectiveness. People have boldly changed their farming practices, reduced the use of pesticides, and expanded the area of environmentally friendly production. Thanks to that, aquatic systems and wild birds have begun to return, gradually creating a sustainable ecosystem - an important foundation for the revival of the Red-crowned Crane flock.

Along with encouraging the expansion of ecological rice cultivation areas to serve the Sarus Crane Conservation Project, Tam Nong district is also one of the leading localities in transforming agricultural production models towards circularity, sustainability and harmony with nature.

Many advanced farming models have been deployed such as: "Circular, modern and low-emission agricultural production"; "Ecological rice production combined with conservation and development of Red-crowned Cranes"; "Sustainable development project of 1 million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030"... These models not only help farmers reduce input costs, increase productivity and product quality, but also limit negative impacts on the environment and preserve natural ecosystems. Exploiting multiple values on the same area also contributes to increasing income and improving livelihoods for people. This is a clear demonstration of the effort to change farmers' production thinking from simple production to ecological production, contributing to building a sustainable green economy for Dong Thap today and tomorrow.

Regarding the benefits from the connection between nature conservation and green agricultural development in Tam Nong district, Ms. Bui Minh Nguyet - representative of WildTour Company (Ho Chi Minh City) commented that Dong Thap's implementation of the Red-crowned Crane Conservation Project and the development of green agricultural production models have created a positive resonance in the development of local ecotourism. “Recently, many of the company's delegations visiting Tram Chim National Park have expressed their interest in the rich and authentic experiences. In addition to familiar services such as bird watching, observing wildlife in the natural environment, visitors also have the opportunity to participate in unique activities such as: a day as a farmer in the harvest season, visiting and experiencing the flood season, exploring ecological rice fields... These experiences not only help visitors discover the beauty of nature, but also deeply feel the lifestyle of the people of Dong Thap, closely connected to and in harmony with the environment. This is a sustainable direction, both helping to protect the natural ecosystem and creating opportunities to increase income for farmers through developing tourism associated with green agriculture to meet the increasing needs of modern tourists", said Ms. Bui Minh Nguyet.

Dong Thap is gradually affirming its position as a pioneer in preserving natural heritage associated with sustainable development. From ecological rice fields to the return of red-crowned cranes, all are proof of a methodical, dedicated and responsible approach. When people live in harmony with nature, nature will also respond generously. From Tram Chim wetland, a green message is spreading, conservation is not simply preservation, but the origin of new values, where economy, environment and culture develop together. This journey will be long, but what Dong Thap is doing today is laying the first solid bricks for a green, harmonious and hopeful future.
