Mr. Trinh Ngoc Chung, Director of the Department of Culture of Vietnamese Ethnic Groups, delivered the opening speech at the Workshop.

To concretize and continue to implement the tasks of cultural work in general and promote the traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities in the coming time, the key task is to preserve culture associated with tourism development; turn the cultural values of ethnic minorities into products of economic value, both improving life and spreading identity to people and tourists. The opinions at the workshop will be the basis for management agencies to recommend competent authorities to build sustainable mechanisms and policies, contributing to preserving identity and promoting socio-economic development of localities.

Culture has always been identified as an important resource for sustainable development, contributing to economic growth, poverty reduction and improving the quality of life. In the context of deep integration, along with the strong development of science, technology and artificial intelligence, preserving and promoting the cultural values of ethnic minorities has become a strategic and long-term task.

The orientation of combining cultural preservation with tourism development has been institutionalized in many important policies such as Resolution No. 08-NQ/TW in 2017 on developing tourism into a spearhead economic sector; Project No. 6 under the National Target Program on Socio-Economic Development in Ethnic Minority and Mountainous Areas for the 2021-2030 period. These policies create a favorable corridor for localities to restore, preserve and exploit traditional cultural values; bring culture into community tourism development, create livelihoods and improve people's lives.

Mr. Nguyen Van Thuat, Deputy Director of the Department of Grassroots Information and External Information attended the Workshop.

Speaking at the workshop, Associate Professor, Dr. Lam Ba Nam, Chairman of the Vietnam Association of Ethnology and Anthropology, said: Each ethnic group possesses a rich treasure of knowledge, accumulated over many generations, related to life, production, and environmental behavior. This is a particularly valuable resource that needs to be respected and properly exploited in the process of sustainable development. He said that it is time to "awaken" the cultural value system of each ethnic group. Besides the policies of the Party and the State, more importantly, if we want to develop sustainable tourism, ethnic culture is the soul.

Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Duy Thieu again expressed the view that it is necessary to put the principle of conservation first, not to trade culture for short-term benefits. Promoting cultural values must ensure sustainability and bring long-term benefits to the community. He proposed solutions such as: building a sustainable tourism development strategy; controlling the scale of tourism; investing in responsible community tourism; training skills for local people to participate in tourism business and improve service quality, while still preserving cultural identity; increasing the application of technology in heritage management and promotion...

According to the Organizing Committee, the Conference received more than 100 presentations from scientists and local representatives. Many in-depth contents reflected practical issues such as: developing cultural tourism products typical of ethnic minority regions; promoting cultural education and community communication; exploiting heritage capital in performing arts to develop tourism; policies, honoring artisans... These opinions are an important basis for competent authorities to propose the Government to develop a decree on preserving and promoting traditional cultural values of ethnic minorities and at the same time orienting the building of cultural tourism brands in ethnic minority regions in the coming time.
