Báo Thanh niênBáo Thanh niên30/09/2024

This is a special campaign officially launched this morning (September 30th) by Vietnam Airlines , Vietnam Aviation Service Company (VASCO), and the People's Committee of Con Dao District.

The People's Committee of Con Dao District, Vietnam Airlines, and Lagom Vietnam Company have signed a Memorandum of Understanding affirming their commitment to cooperation.

Con Dao Island is known as an attractive tourist destination with its pristine natural beauty and diverse ecosystem. In recent years, the rapid development of tourism has placed significant pressure on Con Dao's waste management infrastructure, especially plastic waste. Furthermore, the impact of climate change has degraded environmental quality and threatened the island's unique ecosystem. The "Fly Light to Con Dao" campaign, with the message "Fly a Thousand Miles Lightly," is being implemented as a pioneering initiative to combine aviation development, sustainable tourism, and a circular economy . The phrase "Fly Light" in the message implies a new definition of sustainable flights for Vietnam Airlines . Through this initiative, Vietnam Airlines encourages passengers on each journey to minimize luggage weight and reduce plastic waste, thereby lightening the weight of each flight and reducing CO2 emissions, thereby contributing to the successful achievement of the Government 's goals for green and circular economy development. At the launch ceremony, the People's Committee of Con Dao District, Vietnam Airlines, and Lagom Vietnam Company signed a Memorandum of Understanding affirming their commitment to cooperation and launching a pioneering campaign on environmental protection. This cooperation agreement affirms the leading role of the Con Dao authorities, as well as the efforts of Vietnam's national airline to accompany the island district in its journey towards sustainable development, participating in the Government's goals for green and circular economy development and net emission reduction.

Along with that are activities such as reforestation, conservation of plant and animal ecosystems, and biodiversity in Con Dao, contributing to improving the living environment and maintaining a sustainable ecosystem; painting murals along roads to spread the message of environmental protection and build an image of a green, clean, and beautiful Con Dao. The mobile application "Plastic-Free" has been launched to help customers and residents of Con Dao Island take action together to minimize single-use plastic waste, aiming to reduce plastic waste in Con Dao. Mr. Dang Minh Thong, Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Ba Ria Vung Tau province, stated: “The 'Fly Light to Con Dao' campaign is one of the practical activities that concretely contributes to the roadmap for reducing plastic waste, reducing CO2 emissions, and moving towards the goals of green economy, circular economy, and sustainable development in Con Dao district.” Mr. Dinh Van Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, expressed his belief that: “Protecting Con Dao is not only about preserving the landscape and living environment of today, but also a precious gift for the future. When we 'fly light' in this way, each person will contribute to preserving the 'pearl island' of Con Dao for many generations to come.”

Representatives from Vietnam Airlines presented Con Dao with 10 sets of tables and chairs made from recycled materials.

Previously, on September 23-24, Vietnam Airlines, in coordination with the Con Dao District Youth Union, organized a campaign to "Collect Plastic Waste, Clean the Sea" at Bai Nhat beach and "Collect Plastic Waste, Receive Green Gifts" in residential areas No. 2 and No. 7. After two days, the program collected 780 kg of waste, including 380 kg of recyclable plastic waste. This waste was sorted and transported to the mainland to be "recycled" into green recycled products such as tables, chairs, and plant pots, which were then donated back to Con Dao. At the launch ceremony, Vietnam Airlines and VASCO presented a special and meaningful gift: 10 sets of tables and chairs recycled from the plastic waste collected in the island district. These sets of tables and chairs will be placed at tourist spots and residential areas throughout Con Dao as a strong message about environmental protection, thereby increasing awareness among residents and tourists about reducing and recycling plastic waste.
