Belarus checks border with Russia for first time in 28 years

This is the first time in 28 years that the 1,239 km border between the two countries has been inspected. According to Foreign Minister Aleinik, the introduction of border control measures is aimed at preventing the entry of third-country nationals into Belarus.

Minister Aleinik said that checks on people crossing the Belarus-Russia border are carried out by Belarusian border guards in close cooperation with their Russian counterparts. “It’s not really a control, it’s more like monitoring the situation at the border,” Aleinik told reporters in Moscow.

In 1995, all border controls between Russia and Belarus were lifted. Russia and Belarus have a union agreement, under which the Kremlin subsidizes the Belarusian economy , through loans and discounts on Russian oil and gas.

A unified database of people eligible for military service needs to be created in time for the upcoming fall draft, Russian Digital Development Minister Maksut Shadayev said on Wednesday.

Under new Russian regulations, signed into law last month, anyone who has received a military call-up either in person or online is banned from leaving the country before appearing at a military service office.
